    I'm trying to locate a Stainless Steel Battery Heat Shield for a 550, part number 178884.

    I purchased one from Ricambi several years ago, but it was plain steel, not stainless as the original.

    Any leads on a source or does anyone have a used one laying about?

    Since the shield is unobtanium, I put a sheet of foam from an ice cooler between the coolant tank and the battery.

    Seems to me that the 575 flexible (cut to need) battery heat shield/wrap would work fine in the 550 if needed. No. 39 in pic,
    p/n 188068.
    Also if the stainless 550 heat shield were discontinued it would not be a difficult part to accurately reproduce.

    A good metal fabrication shop can make a stainless steel heat shield for you using your steel shield as a template.

    I wanted to bring this thread back from the dead.

    Is it customary to just remove these shields entirely? Do they actually work in keeping heat away from the battery?
    Reason I'm asking is I find it quite dangerous working around the battery having a giant metal sheet so close to the positive battery terminal.
    If it does actually help I'll keep it on, but if not I'd rather just leave it off.

    My car from 1999 was without when I bought it. Then later I got one from a 2000 car and put it on. I can’t really see how it reduce the heat from the engine. I just looks better. I have measured the heat inside the engine compartment at the brake cylinder and during a traffic jam, the temperature is about 90-100 degrees Celsius, which is a lot for a battery. That might explain why our batteries don’t last a long time. These cars were obviously meant for driving at speed and not running idle for houres in traffic.

    Thanks for the info that's good to know. I need to replace the battery and was debating going with an AGM, but considering those seem to have even less heat tolerance than standard flooded batteries I think I'll stick to the old tech.

    Thanks for that link I just read through most of it, I guess my worries of the AGM battery life may have just been from odd exceptions.
    I'll get back on the AGM train!

    FYI, that shield 178884 is stocked at Ferrari in Italy. Any dealer can order it for you, usually 3-4 week lead time
