Ok, here's a quick loyalty test... If you could trade in your personal 308/328 GTB or GTS for a brand spanking new 488 GTB or Spyder (your choice of colour and spec) for absolutely nothing, just a straight swap, would you do it? Yes or No?
Yes, I would trade my 85 308 for a new 488 Pista Spyder ... drive it for a week or two, then sell it, and buy my former 308 back again, plus a single-mirror Testarossa, and have enough left over to pay for the garage extension project I'd need to keep one more car and all my projects under cover.
Assuming I have to keep and not flip it, no. But I've not the biggest admiration for the 488. So I wouldn't trade a car I love for one that I don't, and can't even work on. You should have offered a 458. Then at least I'd ponder a trade.
No Pista, only "standard cars" and you can't flip for extra cash. So in your case that's a no to swapping your 308. Nice.
Unfortunately Mike it's a hypothetical just to see how loyal our 3x8 members are. See if they can be tempted away from their rides.
I know Mark, actually there were a couple of times where I could have trade my 308 for a 360 but I said no but 488 is really tempting but I probably wouldn’t do it either plus my wife won’t let me because it has a sentimental value to us. I hope we pass as a loyal 308 owner.
I've actually passed on trading the 328 for both a 355 and a 360 over the 16 years I've owned it. Some of us were discussing literally this choice today at an F1 watching party. While the newer machines are much better in every way, I cannot afford to maintain them. Ceramic rotors, computerized everything, and diagnostics that require systems that cost more than my current car. I think the 458 (not 488) is gorgeous, but no way would I make that trade if I had to live with it long term.
My 328 has meaning beyond $ and that's why I bought one, so no. 488 is just another new car, albeit a pricey one... But obviously if flipping was allowed then I would and then buy mine back along with some extra toys...
A couple of years ago a friend was heckled by a McLaren 12C at some lights - they joked about a direct swop for his 308GTS - when they lights changed they drove away very quickly because he replied 'OK' !
Exactly my feelings as well: I don't have any interest whatsoever for the 488; but the 458 would be at least attractive. That being said: - I don't like cars full of electronics gizmos; - I wouldn't have a Ferrari without a manual gearbox, - what would I do with a 458 in a country where the speed limit is now 50 miles per hour? That car would be seized by the courts in a week after I got it, so... So: thanks, but no thanks. Rgds
I would swap my 308 for one of the older famous 1950s or 1960s Ferraris (a 1957 250 Testa Rossa, s'il vous plaît), but would not for anything newer.
After renting a 488 for a 3-day weekend, HELL YES. Of course, this "swap" would be a windfall given the price delta. After doing the swap, I'd buy another 308.
I'm not a great driver: I would kill myself with the 488. I like the 488 Pista but not the 488 GTB, nor the spider. I (by far) prefer to keep my 208 turbo/308 GTB and washing it sometimes after a small drive here around. I would do the swap just if I could sell the 488 and then buyback my former car at the market price, keeping the gain. No other reason. ciao
Wow - hard question. Having driven one on track and off Track they are amazing cars... and the function so well in todays traffic. but ... when they come out of warranty the cost to repair and replace will be staggering... while the values continue to fall... so then you have a double whammy... but emotionally I still say yes... BUT with my 328 its a car I know intimately, and being an 86 model, Enzo was still alive and actually went in to the office every day.... so since I'll never be able to afford an "Enzo" era Ferrari... I will say No to a 100% trade to a new 488. ... but it would hurt. the new cars are simply amazing ... but in the end they are not the same Ferrari of years gone by....
You raise some good points there Tom. Just for the record I wouldn't swap my 328 GTS for a 488 either. Just something really special about the classic analogue cars. I would love to have both in my garage (actually rather a 458) then you get the best of both worlds but if it was one or the other I'll keep the 328.
Not me. I wanted a 308 since I was 13 back in 1981. I didnt want just any Ferrari. It had to be a 308. Besides. I would miss the stick....
