That's true - but have you never watched race horses being forced into the starting box with ears flat back, eyes wide and rolling, flanks quivering - I call that distress. And how many 'hobby' horses have broken their shoulder while being ridden?
Simple simon was referring to the running and being whipped. Some horses even hate going into a float or stable! That doesn't make racing cruel. Accidents are terrible, but horses injur themselves in so many different ways that I think it's unfair to single out racing. Steeple chasing...that's another issue.
I always thought that was rather pointless. They don't move, and you can see them from miles away. What's the point of chasing them?
Simon was just calling out the most onvious cruelty (whipping), I don't think he meant the running per se is cruelty. But your reply that horses get stressed at other times does not negate the ill-effects of racing; you also presume that it is only the boxing, not the anticipation of the racing which is stressing them. I happen to think many horses are smart enough to know what's coming and hence baulk. Certainly there are other horses who truly seem to relish racing... There is too much money in racing for people not to bend the rules on a regular basis.
1. Glad I’m not flying tonight 2. Given we’re only nine days away from summer, I doubt it’s ever been this cold. Damn global warming!... Image Unavailable, Please Login

Great spot Steve.....I used to spend a lot of time there in the late 80s doing the Lord Howe runs in the chieftain.......
Never mind, soon there'll be a nice dust storm to polish the turbine blades (or deglaze the bores if you're in something smaller)
