I have a set of 16" BBS E50, 3 piece mesh wheels, for my 308 QV - with gold centres. Apparently they were a dealer option back in the 80s. I use them maybe 20% of the time - put them on for a month or two, then switch back to the OEM wheels. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here are mine, painted 2-1/2 years ago. They've gotten rave reviews since. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Did we do this previously? Gold for events - would love some coffin spokes, but not managed that yet... Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you're thinking of doing this, find a reputable wheel shop and bring them good photos of those old racing Ferraris, like P4s or 512s or similar vintage F1 cars, and sit with them going through their paint chips to pick the right shade. As stated before, the sheen should be semi-gloss.
I have posted this picture of mine before. Easy to do with Gotti wheels: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wrong Ferrari model, but I did go gold. Does anyone know why the Ferrari race cars of the late 60s, early 70s tended to have gold wheels??? Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my VS990 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Another couple of views of my wheels. You can see how grungy they were before the repainting! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I looked at this some years ago to determine what paint code was used. I followed some guidance from a Ferrari forum and painted mine the factory color called nocciola - not even close to the correct color, but I still like it so may keep it on. Best explanation I could find was that it was originally simply the special primer used on the magnesium wheels without any topcoat to save on weight. From memory this was also done by Carol Shelby with the AC Cobra race wheels at the time. The paint was a zinc chromate primer called Dow7. The color changed rapidly and the finish deteriorated which is why wheels even in period photos look old on new race cars! My guess is Ferrari quickly ditched the weight saving measure and just painted them gold as they looked so cool
Wow!! I've asked countless "Ferrari experts" about the race wheel color with no good answer. Now I know. Thanks!! Sent from my VS990 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
