The great thing about RBR is they allow their drivers to actually race each other hard.

Now they just need an engine which allows it.

Time will tell if the trust Red Bull did put in Honda will be rewarded.

Another 3 months and we will know.

Yep - a Honda that can get within sniffing distance of the MB and SF engines would be good for the sport.

The 2019 power unit of the Cavallino designed for the Red Army signed 670 has several structural parts that are no longer made in fusion. Ferrari uses new technologies that use metal powder. Here are some surprises we have to expect from the 6-cylinder turbo.

Mercedes had arrived there first, but Ferrari is not at all sleeping. Rather. In Maranello they are ready to raise the bar in what in the motor field is turning into an exciting challenge of materials and technologies to improve the efficiency of the Red.

On the 670, this is the design theme of the 2019 single-seater of the Cavallino, there will be a power unit derived from that 6-cylinder that rivaled power with the 6-cylinder F1 M09 EQ Power + made at Brixworth, often resulting better than the engine silver arrow.

Corrado Iotti, head of the Reparto Corse motorists for a year, has had the merit of extending the life of the power unit (which in 2017 had compromised the world championship climb for a series of breaks in the long Asian trip) without going to the detriment of performance. To be an engineer who came from the GT area, he certainly did a great job.

The 2019 engine regulations remain essentially stable, with the only addition of 5 kg of extra fuel, going from the current 105 kg to 110 kg of maximum capacity. According to the simulations you should earn about 3% of power (over 20 horses on the endothermic unit), but it will be important to maintain the reliability values achieved with the use of only three engines throughout the entire championship.

And then it turns out that Ferrari, thanks to the very modern Renishaw machines, has changed the way to make the 6 cylinders of F1: no more mergers for bases and heads, no pieces made from solid, because for a couple of years the parts also structural parts of the propeller can be realized thanks to the additive manufactoring.

In short, the Scuderia increasingly exploits additive production systems that use metal powder to build components directly from the CAD file thanks to bed-fusion technology.

Vulgarly we could say that Ferrari uses highly sophisticated "3D printers" AM Renishaw, but not only, to create parts that have increasingly complex geometries and very thin walls that could hardly be maintained with more traditional methods.

The adoption of brand new aluminum alloys allows Guido di Paola, the chief designer of the engine, to design a lighter head, able to withstand the greater stresses that will occur in the combustion chamber thanks to the superior availability of fuel.

The goal will be to further increase the pressure in the room, using a map that will degrade the petrol-air mixture in search of performance, without having to deal with the dangerous detonations.

The new metals will give greater structural rigidity to the cylinder head, while a special Shell petrol will also prevent detonations with a clear piston cooling function.

In the Ferrari 670, which has Enrico Cardile as the project leader, there is an attempt to reduce resistance to progress with even tapered bellies compared to what has not already been those of the SF71H: in addition to a different arrangement of the cooling is the ambition to reduce the radiant masses by exploiting the greater efficiency of the 6 cylinders.

The introduction of new alloys and the production of parts in additive manufactoring should allow the resolution of a more extreme engine with the concentration of certain metallic powders only at certain points of the head and not in others for which the bi-metallic alloy can be modified moment by moment.

Some details require processing of a few days, so that during the process you can add new dust to the machine without interruption or downtime, so much so that 95% of unused metal powders is recovered and reused.

It is understandable how much development time can be speeded up: if with traditional work to prepare a base it took almost nine months and for a head it took about twenty weeks, now it takes only a few days. It is therefore possible to understand why each engine of the three granted in one season can be totally different from the one previously mounted. The changes in terms of duration and performance can be adopted in a short time by one third.

In the last two years, F1 has introduced in the factories of the 4.0 technology teams that are now mature to change the way cars are built in unquestionably faster times than in the recent past.

And the challenge, therefore, will not be limited only to the quality of the machines, but also to the speed with which they can be developed with respect to the competition. Who, in the arc of the season, will know how to dictate the step to the adversary, could give to its pilots a really important competitive advantage.

Needless to say, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc count us a lot ...

Racing Point F1 team reveals date for launch of new look in 2019 - https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/140707/racing-point-reveals-date-for-launch-of-new-look

The Racing Point Formula 1 team is set to reveal its new look at the Canadian International AutoShow next February.

Racing Point, the successor to the Force India entry that fell into administration last summer, will officially present its new identity and 2019 livery at the Toronto event on February 13.

That is five days before pre-season testing will begin at Barcelona and two days prior to Ferrari's 2019 launch, which is the only other unveiling confirmed so far.

The decision to launch its season in Toronto means the first look at the Silverstone outfit's latest guise will be in the home country of the leader of the consortium it is now owned by - Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, father of the team's new-for-2019 driver Lance.

Their sponsor BTW is the reason for the pink livery. So far, no mention of BTW leaving. IMO, yes, still pink.

    We can only hope.

Renault was crap and Ricci is doomed but whether RBR will be a challenger with the Honda still remains to be seen.

Quite frankly I hope I'm dead wrong about Renault: I have always liked them a lot since Jabouille and Arnoux brought the first turbo ever to F1. And Prost is my hero to begin with.

Renault has won championships in the past, and several teams have used their engines quite successfully too.

So they don't have to be ashamed.

Their engineering isn't too bad, but they not so good in chassis design.

As for Ricciardo, I don't know the length of his contract with Renault, but he could be on the move in 2 years' time if things don't go too well with the French team.

Pink seems to be the product color for their "Magnesium Mineralized Water." Perhaps BWT will promote their "Silky Soft Pearl Water" with that Chalky Blue.

Very serious issues at hand here...RBR-Honda questions pale in comparison.

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/140742/renault-has-found-a-lot-for-2019--mclaren

Renault has found "a lot of kilowatts" in the development of its 2019 Formula 1 engine, customer team McLaren has been told.

While the French manufacturer failed to do enough last year to convince Red Bull to keep using its engines, the early indications are that it has made decent steps with work for 2019, when it will power its works team and McLaren.

Speaking to selected media on Wednesday, McLaren CEO Zak Brown revealed there was a mood of optimism coming out of Renault about its potential for next year.

"They are telling us that they are very pleased with their winter progress," said Brown.

"They have found a lot of kilowatts, and think they will be in the ballpark.

"It is not appropriate for me to quote the numbers they have given us, but I think they feel they are going to be very competitive next year."

Any step forward from Renault will be a boost to McLaren, which is hoping to recover from a disappointing 2018 campaign that fell short of expectations.

While the team accepts there is no quick fix that will get it back to the front of the grid in the short term, Brown says the feedback from his engineering and design team is positive.

"There is a lot of cautious optimism, but we clearly don't want to get ahead of ourselves," he said.

"We have done that before and we are not going to make the same mistake twice.

McLaren has begun Fernando Alonso 2019 Formula 1 car test talks -- https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/140754/mclaren-has-begun-alonso-2019-f1-test-talks

McLaren has spoken to Fernando Alonso about the possibility of him testing its 2019 Formula 1 car.

Although Alonso has now left F1 and will continue his World Endurance Championship commitments, as well as return to the Indianapolis 500 in 2019, he is expected to retain close links to McLaren in the future.

His second Indy 500 bid will be under the banner of McLaren Racing and McLaren CEO Zak Brown has made public his desire to have Alonso involved in any racing activities outside of F1.

There had been speculation that Alonso could test McLaren's 2019 car, and both Carlos Sainz Jr and Lando Norris have said they would welcome the two-time F1 champion's input.

But McLaren is keen to avoid compromising the track time of its all-new line-up for 2019.

Brown has now confirmed that conversations with Alonso have taken place.

"We have spoken about testing and that is something we are going to talk about further over the winter," said Brown.
