Has anyone ever run into this before?

The 4 holes on my rear panel are just barely covered when I hold my standard size license plate against it.
How in the heck do you mount without drilling 4 additional holes?

The only holes put there by the factory are covered by and used by the standard US plate. If yours is different it is because it has been modified.

I had to drill holes in my license plate to line up with the studs in my factory license plate holder. 1978 308
The holes in my Ferrari were sized to the studs on my license plate holder. Two of the aluminum studs were missing/ broke off, so I had them all redone to incorporate a stainless steel stud.

There were no holes which lined up to a standard license plate.

Early cars were drilled for the old style frames. I had forgotten that. That goes back at least to the Daytona.

My 78 did not line up with my NY plate. I drilled the plate to fit.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that but the holes would be so close to the plates edges

Mine were close also, but I drilled them and put a rubber sheet between the plate and body to prevent digging into the paint.
