Whoa, the season starts tomorrow, who is going to replace him? This man creates havoc even when he dies. It's always sad to see a relatively young man leaving.
Shocked to read this news of Charlie’s unexpected and sudden passing at such a young age. Very sad. He was part of the F1 furniture. A permanent fixture, a member of the F1 elite and one of the good guys. I didn’t always agree with his reluctance to let the drivers race in the rain, but his motivation was always clear and just - the quest for driver safety above all else. His positive legacy will last a lifetime. RIP.
Local news is saying Michael Masi who is the V8Supercar Race Director was in line to replace Charlie at the end of the year. I guess they will announce the replacement tomorrow morning.
Shocking news. I've disagreed with some of his recent calls but that doesn't take away that he was a lovely guy. Loved the sport, loved the people. He'll be missed. RIP Charlie.
Shocking news from Australia! - Charlie Whiting will be missed by all involved in F1, and beyond. 66 is no age at all! Apparently Sebastian Vettel shared part of a track walk with Charlie yesterday, where they enjoyed a good chat, and a bit of a laugh together, and has said that that has intensified the level of shock for him. As for Charlie's death creating chaos this weekend: The reality is, with the exception of the shock, and the proper, and well deserved respect being paid to Charlie this weekend, F1 will carry on exactly as it would have done had he still been alive - because that's how F1 is: There's a job to be done, and everyone will get on and do it, and that's what Charlie would have wanted. Longer term, Charlie will be missed massively because of how teams could go to him and ask for his opinion on technical and race issues, in an informal manner, off the record. My favourite Charlie Whiting moment will always be the sight of him wagging his finger at Fernando Alonso in Shanghai in 2010, after Alonso had jumped the start in his Ferrari - It was a proper: "I saw that!.......Naughty boy!" moment! Rest In Peace Charlie - Thank you for all your efforts and hard work over the years, to bring us the sport we love!
Sorry to hear of his passing. Charlie seemed to really care about the sport and drivers in my opinion. Sorry for his family and friends. Life is short, enjoy every day!
I knew Charlie from the All Car Equipe days, club racing with his brother, always a nicely turned out and fast car. Worked with them too when they ran the Surtees chassis in the Shellsport and Aurora series. Kept a nodding relationship in F1 and have followed his progress carefully. A quiet and fair man, totally respected by all that knew and worked with him. Truly hard to replace, maybe sadly yet another backwards step for our beloved sport. RIP mate.
Rest In Peace Charlie One of the many risks of long flights...I can almost bet that was the root cause. I’ve lost two colleagues for the same cause after long flights...move your feet, stand up and walk, take a low dose aspirin... Big loss for F1
I was thinking maybe Herbie Blash because of the connections but he’s getting up there in age and was more of a project man..
