I agree Byrne is up there, with more championships to his name. However Newey is the more innovative designer where Byrne was an evolution guy and of course had the benefit of the most powerful engines of the day (BMW at Benetton and Ferrari at Ferrari) whereas Red Bull succeeded on the strength of their chassis.

The Byrne designed Tolemans and Benettons are quite crude when you look closely, whereas Newey's cars bristle with clever details. e.g. '86 Benetton front bulkhead (at the driver's knees) is glued into the tub, March has the tub moulded around it. Byrne continued using glued bulkheads at Ferrari, which is why this happens.

I was at the Laguna Seca Historics in 2004 where that happened and saw it live

The car was owned by a Dutch Ferrari dealer (Kroymans) who was driving at the time as part of the F1 Corsa Clienti program. The story that was told at the time was that the car had been previously crashed during its racing career in 1999 and Kroymans bought it and then lengthened the chassis so he could fit in it. The repair was not done by Ferrari

Reading about the Rodin FZed today..... 'the Lotus T125 says Dicker was so poorly developed that you did three laps and the engine cover caught fire. It was hopeless'

Yes, you are accurate in saying "the story that was told". There's always a "story" when something publicly embarrassing for a manufacturer happens.

Another Ferrari F1 tub broke in the same place when crashed in a demo at Phillip Island (I won't go into details).

Nah, this was the story on the same day of the crash. nothing to do with Ferrrai going into damage mode. It's been documented elsewhere that Kroymans extended the chassis to fit his tall stature without factory approval

Wet day 4 of Targa, at 50 seconds of the video , Porsche stops mid stage, due to a "confused gearbox" so much for cleaver autos

For those that don't realise why the 037 is so revered (Clarkson is stupid , but it did win the WRC :) )

I have seen snippets of that story but that sums it up , 037 is a fabulious thing and Walter Rohrl made the pefect combination. Audi must paid him bucket loads to drive the Sport Quattro latter

Wow! He punted an almost standard Elise into 3rd outright in about '98, I think. A very good steerer, who knows the event well, but some very fast competition - I'll have to go through the results and see what happened

I was impressed he was only driving the 350 Exige. 430's are that much quicker again.

I've just entered the 037 in the Noosa Hillclimb on the weekend of 8th June. Hope we see some QLD Whomos there!

Outrageous entry fee - $240! Talk about budget motorsport. We haven't used the car in anger since Coffs Harbour about 5 years ago, so I'm looking forward to it :)

Well, his car has a lot of horsepower, so should be faster, but it's also a lot more expensive, so he'll drive slower. Of course, he could always do what Gezim did to beat me :p
