In Bologna. Presented by Formula Passion, auto club of Bologna in the city hall. He gave his cv, Mercedes structure, its management, and questions. The bigs of the Italian motor press were here. Plenty of good questions too.

Based on the little I know of Ferrari’s management style, my guess is Ferrari functions like a company of old. Mercedes is a let’s fix our problems right away.

And at least 2 people suggested he should return to Ferrari, and I thought he said (don’t want to post something false) that he finds himself fine where he is now.

What exactly is he doing now? I thought he was moving towards retirement and was (or going to be) replaced.

Why would he leave a well drilled team that possibly listens to him and takes notice. SF shot themselves in the foot.

If a guy like Adrian Newey cannot make the current car meet the requirements / needs then who else can. I would suggest SF are doing the best they can being the bridesmaid with Costa the groom at Mercedes!

PS- wished I was there too

Technical advisor to Mercedes. Spends some time each month with them. James Allison is the new tech chief.

It’s a real fine balance. I saw a cut away if part of the car and the packaging is incredibly tight. If the cars design is structured around aerodynamics, and the design is wrong, everything underneath has to be redesigned and that can’t be done quickly. I didn’t ask questions on the hydraulic systems routing, don’t remember how many meters of wire the car has, and it’s got an incredibly low weight.

It almost seems the only changes that can be made are with the add ins like the wings and side wind deflectors.

Maybe Newey could have built a winning SF car with Ferrari’s power. Costa did note the Melbourne upgrades were brought to Barcelona for the second week of testing.

I spoke to the logistics chap, and he said that everyone in Brackley after being behind SF in week 1 of winter testing worked hard and all wanted to win. I think the management structure is what make Mercedes effective. They have a no blame culture and it was said that no one knows the name of the mechanic who dropped the ball (changing tyres at that one race 2 years ago). And if SF still has a blame culture, moving towards a Mercedes style culture, this too is not an overnight fix.

Totally agree, this is possibly the difference between them and a fundamental one too, the SF structure has always been volcanic! Being 1/2 Italian myself, I get the passion.

I think Newey would have possibly failed at Ferrari given the politics.

Upgrades for the second week were already designed, made & boxed ready to go. These don't appear overnight especially between week 1 & 2.

Perhaps Tony I read too much into what the logistics guy said. But for me the take away was everyone pulled together and had the strong desire to win.

And in a blame culture the words may be the same but the results are not.

I am sure there is a desire to win in the Ferrari team past and present and lets not forget they are best of the rest, I think the difference is morale of the troops and moreover confidence in the leader. If Binotto can encourage positivity in the team then ideas and design will flourish, make everyone cower in the corner frightened to be creative and you get zero advance.

Mercedes have a highly spirited motivated team but it will end at some point, if history is repeated.

    Best Regards

    Tony

So true, let's hope there are not too many Machiavellis in the teams employ.
