Lap 1, Norris vs Hamilton, showed how two cars should go side by side through T3 - Norris tried to go down the inside, but left room on the outside. Verstappen was slightly behind in the braking zone approaching T3 - that’s why he had DRS on the 3-4 straight. However, he was the slightest bit ahead at the apex and when they touched front wheels. In Canada, the stewards said it was because Seb turned out towards the right after he regained control and closed the gap on the right, proved using telemetry - only that slight release of steering angle was why Seb got the penalty there... but that was for rejoining the track n an unsafe manner. Completely different regulations regarding the incident in Austria, neither driver was rejoining the track. However, I’m sure the stewards are reviewing the steering angles of both drivers through the corners, did Max open up steering to move left after the apex? It looks like he did just a very slight amount; was he losing grip through understeer then, or did he do it just to run Leclerc wide? I suspect that point, the telemetry on corner exit, will be the deciding factor for the stewards.
The deciding factor is whether the penalty would benefit or penalize Ferrari In the case of Verstappen / Leclerc, the rule is really clear (one could disagree with the rule and ask for it to be changed, but it's simple: one driver has to leave room on the track for the other driver). So Verstappen should be penalized (and I bet he would have been against a Mercedes driver...) In the case of Vettel vs Hamilton, there was no clear rule but Vettel got penalized nonetheless. It just shows that Ferrari has become as bad at loobying as at managing pit stops.
Let's get on with this already. Are we getting poetic justice for Canada, consistency in enforcing the rules, and thus riots against FIA to end said BS rules and regs, or not!!!
Agreed, things shouldn't be decided after the race and the podium. All this excessive regulations should stop and what happens on the track should be the end result. They should let drivers race, this is getting ridiculous. Canada was a win for Vettel, and this is victory for Max...
The letter of the law is clear, the second movement on the steering by Max is what they HAVE to concentrate on, it’s the second movement, and it’s the same likely involuntary movement that Seb did the other week that cost him the race. It’s a farce, and I don’t agree with a penalty for it, but if they give it in favour of Merc, they have to go in favour of ferrari. If not, it proves the game is rigged in favour of Mercedes
Poor old Mario. He laments the "good old days" of racing ... when a driver died every season on the track I like Andretti ... in fact, i consider him to be the best all-around driver of all time ... but he should really read the CURRENT rules, and try hard to understand them.
Poor old Mario he remembers when racing drivers were RACERS and DRIVERS not technicians and everyone gets a ribbon for holding station. As far as deaths how many died of boredom watching the Spanish and French GPs?
And the decision is....... 10sec time penalty for Vettel (since the stewards obviously don't like him) In all seriousness though, wtf are they waiting for??
