What is the highest mileage 328 out there ? Have been looking at an 87 car with 64K.Full history. This seems fairly high in comparison to others around. How many miles should a 328 be able to do before major work required?
Well, I've got 66,000 on mine, so you should be good for another 2,000 miles or so. No, seriously, it's more a matter of what kind of maintenance has the car had, and how recent is the maintenance, that the total mileage. There are a number of users here with 3x8's sporting 20,000-30,000 miles more than that with no serious issues to report.
Mine has 97,000 on it, motor's never been apart and it's still pulling strong. Last dyno shows 223 at the wheels, 260 at the crank -- dead on what it should be. I know of several that have gone 150K+
64k is nothing if it's maintained regularly and properly, this also means that at 64k miles the car is being driven which what the car is made for. If it pass PPI, have the LATEST service history then 64k is not high at all. My 84 308 QV had 67K miles when I got it and has 71,500 now and still running like new. Remember it's not the milage it's the overall condition IMO.
Nothing wrong with 64K except that it hurts market value. Negotiate accordingly and you could get a good driver at a bargain price.
There was one on ebay 6 months ago in Hawaii that had 110k and it had the interior completely raped and pillaged. I also saw one in the march issue of Keith Martins Sports Car Market Magazine that sold at auction for 41000 that had 99,950 miles on it. JJ
Mines got 45K miles. I would think that $36-40K max depending on the cosmetic condition and current needs. I've only had mine for 3 months and everythings been great so far. Good luck in your search. Jeff
I bought a 87 328 in Dallas last August....Paid $35k ....but the seller had receipts for $34k in general upkeep, several majors, new alternator, etc, etc. over a 10 year period...( when it became a daily driver at 10k mi until it was sold at 72k). As a new buyer, I was confident of a car with a long history of regular upkeep at one shop ....AND recent major service/with belts, a new clutch, new AC compressor, new zr rated tires,..etc. done just before it was to be sold!!!! I thought I paid for all the work that someone had put into# 73231....and they gave me a free Ferrari 328. Car passed PPI at Norwoods and I was made aware of flaws that higher milage cars have. I will probably buy my next Ferrari with higher miles and regular use over a car with few miles and irregular use. Yes, I have oil dribbles after each drive, but every Italian vehicle I have owned had oil dribbles. I drive the car every week putting on 50 or 100 miles. Great part is that I like the car so well...I just might keep it till I'm too old and stiff to do the contortions getting in and out of it. Of course driving with the Targa off, lets my 6'2" frame get in much easier...the cat likes it too because the car cover becomes a hammock over the cockpit.
36-40K max? This may have been the case a year or two ago, but the 308 value threads and the FML suggest those days are past.
Yep, there's "FChat beat 'em up pricing" and then there's "actual money it takes to buy one pricing." The former is useful in web forums. The latter is for when you want to buy a 308/328.
While at LeMans a few years ago, I met a guy with a 308 with 112k on the clock. He had owned the car for all but 2 years of its life. Always serviced etc. He told me that it used very little oil and he used it as his daily runner.
Fellow FChat member and all around nice guy owns a Euro 328 with 145k+ miles! Platinum show winner! Looks like a 15k mile car. Only normal service, motor never out. Runs stronger with 145k than US 328s with 20k miles. Makes my 348 spider with 51k miles look like a baby. These cars will hold up well if serviced. Sad to say Bullfighter is correct, only hurts resale!
I 2nd spider348's comment. I've judged that car at a concours & it looks & runs mint. Engine has never been opened beyond pulling the cam covers for valve adj. I never would have guessed the mileage if I hadn't seen the odometer... There have been a growing number of reports of well maintained 3x8s with mileages up around 100,000 and no signs of engine wear. A few have needed valve jobs, but that's about the worst that's been reported.
My 89 328 has 102 K miles, and runs as good as it did at 20 k , of course it received everything and anything it has needed and then some over my 20 years of ownership. I hope to have more than 223 at the wheels with my Tubi and test pipe, It sure feels like it has more , 223 is an awfully low number .
Actually, Gino, I think 223 at the wheels is quite good indeed. Tillman's car is a US model, so with catalysator (= F105 040 engine; "X" in the fourth letter of the VIN) for which the power at the crank was supposed to be, when new, according to the factory figures, 260 hp and this is what he has today. To figure the power at the wheel without complicated equations, you usually take 15 to 17% from the power at the crank, so I think that 223 at the wheel is actually exactly what the engine was giving when new. If yours is a "standard euro" model (no cat, F105 engine, "W" letter in the fourth position of the VIN) it was supposed to give 270hp when new, so "about 230" at the wheel would be correct. If yours is a "swiss/sweden" model (catalysed, Bosch KE-3 jet, F105 046 engine, "C" letter in the fourth position of the VIN, it was supposed to give 255hp when new; so 223 at the wheel would be quite good... The Tubi will not give you any horsepower more; the test pipe (if your car had a cat and you put the test pipe instead), perhaps 2 or 3...to actually feel a difference with a standard engine, you would need "about 15hp more", and for this you need a serious work done on your engine... Let's give us the numbers they will find at the dino... Rgds
Thank you for your info I think i should get my car on the dyno at some point and see exactly what the results are I do have to say that I have clowned around now and again dueling with other cars like the 300 HP M3 and a handful of WRXs and also a 350 Z My 328 was equally as quick and then some Which gave me the feeling that I had a more than 223 at the wheels. Its just to bad and quite bewildering that Ferrari did not engineer the 308/328 with at least 350 at the crank, being that lots of you fellows have done mods that gave you more HP and that the motors were still bullet proof .
Yes, these engines could probably give more hp, but when the 328 was new, the euro F105 with 270hp was actually reaching about 85hp per litre, which was a very respectable figure in 1985. I understand that if you want to reach 320 - 330 hp today without supercharching, this is possible but you would have to work mainly on the intake conduits ("porting") which is a specialist's job and costs a lot. As for the engine's themselves, there is quite a difference between the one in my GTB and the one in my GTS: the one from the GTB seems to push more and being more easily revving. And finally, there are so many variables when you are duelling with another car: power, weight, transmission, tyres and the biggest one is...the driver. A very good driver in an average car is much faster than an average driver in a very good car... Rgds
This observation, which I generally agree with and which I have asserted myself many times in the past, makes me wonder just how much modern electronic control systems have leveled the playing field. Modern cars help unskilled drivers perform closer to the level of the experts. In the earlier days of drivers aids, there was a conservatism built into the "nannies" which meant an expert could outperform with the systems turned off. The systems now are so much more refined and allow the car to get closer to the traction limit with the driver hardly having to be cognizant of the fact. I think now it is a matter of courage/stupidity of the inexperienced driver taking the car to the limit without really knowing where that threshold is or having as much feedback as it approaches.
I agree gentlemen for sure, I also want to state that because of these driver aids, we see so many more exotics ending up in the scrape yard , if you know what I mean.
