Hi I just had a prepurchase done on a car and my results from the paint meter were between 108 and 123 depending on panel and spot where it was taken. Would you say this is original paint or a repaint? Really really appreciate the help! Need to make a decision on this car today.

Found this on a search. Not sure if it helps or muddies...

    From a 2015 post...

I have a 2005 F430 F1 and am in the process of selling my car. It has a clean car fax and has been expected by two (2) different professional 3rd parties who each spent several hours inspecting this car and found no evidence of damage/structural repair or paint work.

I sent my car to the Mannheim auto auction and the inspection came back that this car had paint thickness of 8 to 10 mills and they concluded that the car was in an accident.
Both the paint/ body and mechanical specialists who inspected my car strongly disagree...

have read on this forum that most F430's have a great range in paint thickness, between 4.5-7.5 although on some areas of some panels I have seen it goes as low as 3.5 and on some areas (such as the outside back edge of the trunks) it can range in the 8's.

Is it possible that the Ferrari factory could have delivered this car with a paint thickness of between 8 to 10 mills thick?

Where are the thicker parts? It’s extremely common that front bumpers are repainted, does not mean the car has been in an accident.

If the paint are layed on by hand, there will be differences in thickness. Same if done by a robot, but less variations.
If you get a reading that almost doubles - the part has been resprayed.

Some like stone chips better but still haggle over flaws in the paint when buying the car.

Forget Carfax. When shopping for my 360 I looked at a car that was beautiful. While the average purist would not be able to tell, it had had tell tail signs of extensive paint work, albeit, very expertly done. Carfax came back clean with no accidents.

To my knowledge these cars (360s) were painted apart at the factory, in pieces, by humans. Paint thickness can range in a wide margin. Have a restoration shop expert look at the paint. Someone with years of knowledge will be able to tell you where and to what extent there has been paintwork done. Personally, I don't really sweat paint thickness. I am more concerned about the quality of the paint work done and, of course, any damage that has been noticeably repaired.

Unless you are buying a collector show piece with ridiculously low miles that you do not intend to drive and are looking at it as an investment, I wouldn't concern myself so much with paint thickness alone.

Many of the Ferraris when they come in on the east coast get touch paint on different panels as they get marked up in transit. Most go to Coach Works in NJ for paint.

This. Numerous cars are painted at the port due to damage. More than anyone is willing to admit. As others have said, the paint will vary on different panels and many have had bumpers repainted. Regardless, sounds like the car has checked all the boxes. If the PPI checks good, buy it and enjoy!

Mine is a 2002 and when I had it detailed (professionally washed and a ceramic coat added after a bit of polishing), the guy checked the paint depth with his tool and it varied greatly (in some spots being twice as thick as in others). The exact spots, I can't recall, but it was not as even as you'd think...
