Took my F430 in for a complete auto detail 2 days ago.
The shop did a great job.

Except I should have told them to just leave the engine bay alone.............
They did clean the engine and applied engine bay dressing.

On the drive home it started running rough during idle.

    CEL came on:
    • P0011 - Camshaft A Position Timing.
    • P0307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire.
I did some research and for a cylinder misfire it can be clogged injector, bad fuel, low battery, MAF issue.

I thought it could be a MAF issue as when they cleaned the engine they applied some engine bay dressing & some of the engine bay dressing could have made it's way to the MAF sensors. So I cleaned the MAF's with MAF cleaner last night. Done.

I put some Techron fuel treatment to clean the fuel injectors. Done.

I fully charged the battery. Done.

Reset the battery and upon driving again yesterday the same fault codes came back and idle is still rough.
Engine runs smoothly once I get up to about 3K RPM.

Crap, so my next step today - I will check the Bank 7 spark plug and #7 ignition coil pack to see if there is any loose connection, liquid, loose spark plug or anything unusual with the ignition coil packs. (I installed new spark plugs 4 months ago.)

I plan on swapping spark plugs and ignition coil packs from 7 to 6 bank and see if the fault moves too. If it does then maybe I have a bad #7 ignition coil pack.

Anything else I should check for?

Thanks in advance for any help and inputs.

    Dan

Hey Dan, did they hose down the engine bay? If so, I would check the camshaft position sensor's electrical connector. Make sure that the connection is tight and dry.

Yes, silicon sprays act like an electrical barrier.

I think they just wiped the engine down but sprayed engine bay dressing all over.

It's possible the spray engine bay dressing got inside the CPS connection.

I will go check the CPS soon.

    Thanks for chiming in Steve!

... check the CPS first because it could be the cause of the misfiring. Might save you a lot of frustration.

What on earth is engine bay dressing and why on earth would you spray it over the engine

Basically engine bay dressing is a spray that they use to dress up and make the engine look clean and shiny. When I do mine I wipe it down by hand. I spray what I'm going to use on a rag and then wiping it. Good luck Dan i hope you get the issue sorted out. I was hoping that once the engine got hot it would dry things up for you but I guess no dice on that huh?

The intense engine heat dulls paint finish.

After cleaning the engine with engine cleaner (Scrubbing Bubbles) and letting the water dry, an application of engine bay dressing brightens up the painted engine bay parts.

If the owner wants a satin shine (like me) after spraying the engine bay dressing immediately wipe it down with a microfiber cloth.
If the owner wants a little shine they can just spray the dressing and leave it alone.

Here's a photo of my engine bay after I cleaned it with Scrubbing Bubbles and application of Griots Garage Engine Bay dressing, then I immediately wipe it down with microfiber cloth for satin shine.

    I like the results.

I used to do my own car detailing but Im getting too old for that so I just take it to a reputable auto detailer.
They may not be just as careful as I am so next time I will tell them to leave the engine bay alone and I will clean and detail the engine bay myself.

Always remember in life - different strokes for different folks. Your car, do whatever makes you happy.

    Hi Lorenzo,

I too was hoping that the engine bay heat would dry things out and rough idle would go away but so far it hasnt.

I havent had chance to work on my car yet as I just enjoy driving it.

Will try to work on it today and inspect all the cam position sensor connections.

    Thanks.

    To the experts, help please:

P0011 Camshaft Position A. Which one is Position A? Left Hand Side / Driver side?

Also when Ricambi and Ferrari WSM calls out LH Cylinder Head do they mean Driver Side?

    Thanks in advance.

    You are most welcome.

For complete engine bay cleaning procedures please see my post here.

I always get compliments on how nice and clean my engine bay is.

I dont know of any mechanic that would not love to work on a nice and clean engine (versus dirty and neglected).

I used to work on Sulzer 9 RND 90s- u had no choice but to work in crap. Even caterpillars are not exactly clean.
Big engines are never clean even if well looked after
