I live in a gated community and the gate opener always seems to hide beyond my reach in the nether regions of the glove box when I need it. So i decided to do a mod that was kinda popular to porsche 996/986's.

For about half an hours work i did a jury-rigged gate-opener that is activated using one of the OEM 360/430 switches. It works for garage door openers too. (the original porsche thing)

I soldered 2 wires to the bottom of the gate opener switch on the circuit board. They are kinda obvious and I used an ohm meter to see that they were the correct solder joints. I used an OEM switch i bought off of eBay and identified the 2 pins that activate the red light on the opener. The switch is mounted in the 4th "blank" spot to the left of the steering wheel. The opener is velcro'd under the dash. Now all i have to do is hit the switch and abracadabra, the gate opens.
    Works like a charm...

yes, yes, i could just put the opener in one of the console trays, but I don't...

That's cool! I need a 2 way toggle switch. Go up for the gate and down for the garage. Is that doable?

    Bob,

Luv ya man! Clearly a bad azz functional garage door opener and from a dash perspective you made it look OEM. I need this for my 360, but unfortunately I am not mechanically inclined.

@sandy - It's doable. Use one of the Stradale Window switches then use a homelink visor unit that's programmable.

I had same idea as OP some time back (great minds??, amirite) I used a glove box switch, then flipped the logo so it looks like a garage door. I also run illumination wire so it lights up at night.

I also re-ordered the buttons in a way the made more sense from a usability standpoint.

Like this hack! Great job on the OEM look!

Chris, where did you tap into the illumination wire? Also, did you your door opener like OP or did you use a home link and hardwire powe?

Very ingenious. This is what I did for mine. Homelink unit is incorporated into the dome light assembly. Spare dome light assembly, so easily reversible. LED to tell you it is working.

There's an empty connector in my car (I think its for rear fog) I used a blade terminal to connect to the other buttons illumination pin. I try to do all of my mods in a way that they are 100% reversible without damage. If I had all buttons used, it may be more difficult. You could use a T-Tap or pull the pin out and solder a small wire to it.

I bought a homelink visor from a Kia for 15 dollars then gutted the board and installed it right under/behind the AC vent.

How does one go about flipping the logo on one of these switches? Is it simply a matter of removing and replacing the decal?

Send it to one of the sticky refinishers and they can remove the old logo and put whatever you want there or leave it blank.

Yes, It's a piece of translucent plastic, anchored to the sides. you have to be careful with the buttons, they are a bit fragile (also have small springs inside if you decide to open them fully), but its doable.
