Personally I like the WG the most, but I think the P or YG is the way to go for collectability with yellow gold being lowest production followed by platinum. It also depends on what else you've got in your PP collection. With the 5370p you may want some variety so the WG may be the best choice.

Honestly, I think both are equally gorgeous. Sounds like a copout, but really which is better?...apple or cherry pie, chocolate or vanilla, coke or gingerale, burger or hotdog...you get the point. :)

Thanks for posting this. I didn’t know there are a few nipple dials floating around too. I had seen the couple of piece uniques but don’t consider them as typical production. I’m looking to get a WG to wear and a YG just to sock away. Looking historically it seems the low volume watches always did the best over time and while yellow isn’t all that popular these days it’ll no doubt come back in style and become coveted as the low production stainlesses and platinums have.

Like you, I like the 5930g, the 5905p, and of course the 5370p. The one other current watch I think is terrific is the 5204p.

yes I like the 5204p very much and at just over 40mm a more modern size than the 5004 it replaced. I have a few questions on the dial though, the in house crono movemembet has the sub dials at 3 and 9 centered below the equator which leads to crowding in the lower half of the dial (just like in 5270). You see this in the slight chin and also the squashing of the date numbers at 5 and 27. Do either of these bother you?

Absolutely love it. What are your thoughts on the 24 hour sub dial? It me a while to get my head around it but I think I’m ok with it now.

so do watches end up being like cars? if you have 15 watches id think its very easier to wear a new one ever other day etc...or do 13 of the 15 end up sitting in the safe and 2 get worn? i had a prev panerai collection years ago and everything was NIB so they made me some money but i wore my 2 newer ones all the time and i cant say i miss the vintage pieces at all. with the pateks i feel like its hard to differentiate them from one another. i have a 5970g and 5146. i cant see adding anything that resembles those.

Not like cars at all imho, very easy to store and switch out. I wear them all but rather than change daily will normally wear one I love for a while then switch out. I hear you on having different ones (I agree) but I would also have 10 platinum black face pateks if I could.

I read somewhere that certain chronograph hands are ok to leave running because “they have a vertical column”. Can someone explain what that means please?

I think the 5146g has a timeless classic dial and nice useful annual calendar. I find the 5070 a bit polarizing in terms of looks. I personally find the triple railway tracks a bit much. I would take a 5146g over a 5070g.

I don’t think these watches are directly comparable, on the one hand the 5146g is a classic but possibly slightly uninteresting 39mm current production model which retails for $43k and can probably be bought lightly used in the low 30s with a watch that, although not to my taste, has strong connections to the past and has been out of production for 10 years. It is also a quite bold 42 mm in size which some like.
I believe actually the 5070g was only made from 2002 to 2006/7 so potentially only 1,000 or so made.
If you research the 5070 you find articles stating that the dial revisits the “golden era” of the 1940s Patek chronograph etc etc. Basically people really seem to like the reference. I guess what I’m saying is that you are comparing apples and oranges here.
Actually the more I look at the 5070 the more I like it.

A chronograph function is controlled by a column wheel or cam. A typical column wheel chronograph engages the chronograph function by activating sliding clutch with a wheel. A vertical column wheel has an integrated wheel and therefore no sliding clutch. That means less wheels, less gear lash, and more efficiency. Here's a good primer: https://timetransformed.com/2016/10/08/column-wheel/

    Starting a collection,

    Nautilus
IMHO should start with 5711 :)

followed by 5712 and 5726. I got the 5711 and wait for the other 2

On the Aquanaut front I'm a big fan of 5164. All of them will at least not make you loose money. I would always recommend anyone to built up relationship and simply wait.

On the other hand, it seems a bid uncertain what will happen to PP to the future (LVMH & co...).
