This is a new one to me. After over eighteen months of running perfectly through a few thousand miles of driving, my low fuel warning light came on today, about ten minutes into my drive. I always keep it above half a tank when in town, so this was confusing.

I stopped at a station that had 93 and topped it off, and it only took about ten dollars worth, so nothing weird happened. On restart, the OK was followed directly by the low fuel light, and the gauge read empty. Everything else is perfectly fine.

    Anyone else ever encounter this?

There are several possibilities here but I don't think I have seen any other threads with this experience. Sure, the original sending units don't show full and they can leak around the top but nothing like this one. Shouldn't be too hard to diagnose but good luck getting it sorted.

Oh great, a new adventure.

I am driving it a lot to shake it down for a vacation, so this is exactly the kind of thing I'd rather deal with now. I'm planning more resto work anyway.

I'd make sure it's not the sending unit. I'll bet the problem originates under the drivers side of the engine rather than the gauge.

I would isolate the fuel level signal from the fuel pump connector and see if that will affect the fuel gauge reading. That will give you an indication as to whether the fault is the gauge or the fuel level sender. The fuel level sender is on the driver side. Sorry, I don't have the pin out to the connector.

I've got my low fuel light coming on even though my fuel level gauge reads over 3/4 full.
Were you able to find and fix the issue that you were having?

Happened to me with a brand new fuel pump from Ricambi. It was the sender unit attached to the pump. Fuel gauge showed ‘low fuel’. Ricambi replaced it... problem solved.

Could it be a ground issue?

Ground problems have been reported but I think they are rare. These VDO senders go out often. I’m currently putting my 3rd in.

Apologies....take no notice! I got this post confused with another addressing oil pressure sender failures. Getting frail in my mature years!!!

This ended up being a sensor failure in the driver's side fuel pump, BTW. New fuel pump fixed it, and it had been replaced previously, so it was a warranty job.
