while using the 550, i noticed i have pretty severe vibration as the rpm's cross 4000 rpm. It doesnt matter what gear the car is in or if it is in neutral (moving or not moving). Whenever the rev counter crosses through the 4000rpm range the car vibrates meaningfully. It runs smoothly otherwise. I haven't been under to check motor mounts but - could that be a likely culprit?

It could be a lot of things including running on 1 bank.

First thing I would do is put a bottle of Seafoam in the gas tank to clean the injectors.
    It worked in my 575 & 612.

I am not a technical person and I never work on my car I just drive it but I do keep it meticulously serviced so the only thing I can say not knowing much is you are supposed to have been switched over to 575 motor mounts so I would check those:)
By the way if this is a completely stupid thing to say sorry just trying to help

I'd check your front dampner. They've been known to separate and they can damage all kinds of stuff when they do

Not at all! I have the 575 mounts ordered, but was curious if anyone here experienced vibration as a result of failing mounts.

Dumb question: what is the front dampner?

It's the front pulley that the crankshaft drives all the accessories from. It's in two pieces (inner & outer) and the 550 & 456 dampners have been known to separate when the rubber filler gets old, brittle & shrinks. If it's about to let go, it'll cause some vibration, and you might even be able to see some odd looking shaking/movement in it.

The funny thing about that is I have seen a lot of those where the mounts were bad enough the engine was being supported by the steering rack and you still couldn't really feel it. It probably needs the mounts but I suspect it isn't causing your issue.

If you have the ability put the engine to TDC. At that point 2 notches in the OD of the vibration damper inertia ring should point straight up and down.
