if any of you dont know, THIS is my favorite car. i love this car completely. if it were human it would either be my best friend, or i would marry it.
I know you have an F40 and 512TR, what are your thoughts on owning both ? Would owning an F40 make the 512TR obsolete or the 512TR outing less of an occasion. I am lucky to own a 512TR which has been a 90's aspiration and my ultimate car goal is to own a F40 sometime soon which always had the prized position in my heart.
they are different cars, for different purposes, and needs and moods. i am an equal opportunity car enthusiast i believe that there are many different cars to suit different purposes, so i try not to duplicate abilities - each car i own is for a slightly different reason. the F40 is a special car. around town and off boost, it runs like the 308 it came from; docile enough, but very raw - no comforts. on the open road, it can get very violent, and you better be paying attention since the revs rise in a flash and you need to change gears and hang on! the noise, the harsh ride, heaviness of all of the controls is initially intimidating, and then you have to forget you are driving a million dollar car that wants to kill you. but eventually you get used to it, and start to get comfortable with some of the quirks, and enjoy it. the 512tr, as Phil Hill once said, is about 3/4 of an F40. but this is an incomplete description. the power may eventually be 3/4 of the F40, but the delivery is entirely different. the tr revs rise smoothly as expected in a 12 cylinder atmospheric; you have time to think about the gear changes. and the sweet spot for the tr is cruising on big stretches of highway at high speed for hours. the seats are nice, the view is great, the ac works, the radio works, and all is well in the world - you feel majestic. you can relax. there is not much relaxing going on in the F40.
Here's a shot of my 86 Testarossa (2 low mirror conversion) with 288 GTO Wheels installed. If any of you Single Hub Testarossa owners out there are looking for a really nice set of wheels I just put them up for auction on Bring a Trailer. My garage has accumulated way too many spare wheels! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/ferrari-288-gto-wheels-by-speedline/ Image Unavailable, Please Login
@Auraraptor I agree. The look is really fantastic while maintaining that classic period appearance. Ferrari branded and you can say you own a very small piece of a great Ferrari Supercar!
well you are probably pretty well versed in what the boxer feels like yourself ! but as a contrast to the other two..... the 512bbi is more comfortable than the f40, but less than the 512tr. it is cramped for anybody taller than 6ft. all of the controls seem like a car from the 70's, so the feel is 20+ years older than the 512tr, eventho they are only 9 years apart as i always say, the bbi is not a low tech car, it is a no-tech car. everything is heavy and requires deliberate action and interaction by the driver - you must be paying attention, and there is not much relaxing going on. but, it drives very smoothly, pulls nicely from low revs, has mostly predictable behavior, and is rewarding for a driver. more nimble than the 512tr, but not as good a cruiser. the behavior is improved with bigger rims/sticky rubber vs the oem. but here in houston the roads are so bad that i went to my daytona croma's with original size tires to give me some more suspension travel.
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe you're runnign too much psi on modern rubber. With 17 inch rims and PS2s Ive found 29 psi front and 30 rear works out great in terms of steering feel and ride quality is way better than stock. Stock I think the book called for 40 psi because of those felxy sidewalls which made for atrocious ride. If Im backroading it might go to 30 or even 31 front as it noticeably lightenes the wheel, but its then more twitchy over 120 or so on highway. The other issue with modern rubber is alignment as its very different to stock. You might look at Tr specs as thats 17 in rims on a very similar chassis.. Personaly I like a car with 1.5 mm toe in each side for the rear, ie 3mm total. In front assuming its not all worn 1mm total toe in works, or you can to no toe for more reactivity, or the other way a bit more than 1mm toe in for more stabilty.
Does anyone have information on this unit? What auction is it? it was in 2017 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Car was originally imported by Ferrari of Houston, they federalized the car and sold it. The car never left Houston and has had three owners, including the last owner being Ferrari of Houston. I traded my F12 for the car about 4 years ago and fully restored the car over the time period, including bringing it back to its normal specifications. 9K original miles, the car now lives with me and its other Ferrari siblings here in NJ.
Verde Germoglio, it is an original Ferrari color from the 1970, although there are a few Pista's running around in this color. The color is really hard to photograph as it changes a bunch in different light, here are some other pics to try to show the color as it appears in person.
