Thermostat replacement looks easy enough... drain the coolant to below the level of the thermostat housing, housing off, replace thermostat, put it all back together, replace coolant and bleed system.

Just one question: What's the easiest way of draining off some coolant? The X1/9 has a petcock on the side of the block for exactly this purpose, don't see anything similar on the '81 308.

They only have one drain, but it could be mounted on either side of the engine. The boring holes exist.

    Hooray! Ignore my email.

I hope to be putting in my thermostat and rebuilt water pump on Sunday and got a bit worried there. :):)

We make a T-6 aluminum one to splice into the front heater hose that is included in the 3x8 hose kits. Finally got tired of mopping up behind each of these cars when working on them and widdled these up

although not nearly as elegant as mr. helms apparatus,
i took a gates hydraulic "tee" with 2 x 1/2"npt fuel line nipples and attached in-line
with the return heater hose connection under the front access panel (328).

then i installed a brass ball valve to the other leg on the "tee".

this allows connecting to a garden hose adapter and hose.

    no more glycol baths.

I think this device, if connected, drains the rest of the coolant ourside of the block, but I don't know how this device helps drain the block ??? That is the messy part as the coolant gushes out and splashes all over.

    Damn cool looking apparatus though.

I like that Robert. I have an extra pet cock that I can rig up into that tube for my 328.

If it drained down I would have had to cut a hole in the panel which ,makes sense to me NOW! but it is at least lower than the lip of the tube I used to pull the hose off of. I still get about 4 gallons or more out each time!

No one drain will do it all. Just responding to the OP's question, the block doesnt require draining for the T-Stat procedure. The qt or two left behind in the block is far less a problem than the gallons in the system and is only problematic when the pump is removed.

Any port in the storm Bill. We did exactly like you for a good many years and your design works just fine. I needed a smooth fitting for use with our hose and decided it was time to cut up a box load of them in hopes that making it clean and easy would promote preventitive service on the cooling systems.

Steve, Check with Daniel, he should have them in stock with the hose kits.

Well played Rob, its a pleasure to do the work without the mop and bucket always at hand.

Sorry Dave... stupid question time now...

Are you saying that I don't need to lower the coolant level before doing the T-stat? Just undo the cover and let what's in there run out?

I wouldn't do that - look at where the expansion tank is & also look at where your cambelts are (you don't really want to soak those in coolant :) )

you really should drain the coolant from one of the heater hoses. Then, remove the Tstat housing to change the thermostat. You will get some minor coolant leaking down into the front of the engine where the timing belts are but that is unavoidable. Stuff some rags under the water pump areas to soak it up as much as possible. Like Dave said, you don't have to drain the block, unless you want to.

Hi, Reviving an oldie but goodie thread for only one quick question: who sells the Helms hose kits these days ? Are they still available . One popular merchant I called no longer carries them.

    Alternative method that I use.
    • Jack up rear of car.
    • Remove bolt in lower radiator.
    • Let fluid run everywhere
    • Clean up mess

I am interested in the improved methods list above.
