I was tightening the a/c belt when this nut fell on the ground from between alternator and engine .Its a 17mm nut with m10? thread same as bolts used for the cv joints.I am not missing any cv joint nuts and they have a taller tapered section than the spare nut.I have looked all over the engine and cant see anywhere that it could have come from. I think it secures the alternator case (bottom left as you are looking at the alternator from the wheel well). I think this is the bolt that the alternator pivots on.

It may also secure the alternator to the sliding bracket.

On my 78 GTS, I can see a nut like this when I check out the parts diagram #31

That secures the altermator adjusting bracket to the timing cover stud.

I know it’s different size but it looks like the nut for the CV joint

I was hesitant to click on the post due to the title. I was relieved to see it was a mechanical fastener ;)
