Repost from silver.... I’m coming into town and should be there through the weekend. My schedule is a bit up in the air at the moment as I’m flying Hurricane Delta until it makes landfall ~Friday but would like to try and meet up. Not sure how Covid restrictions might be but if anybody is interested I can try and give a quick walk around of the WC-130J over at Lackland/Kelly and talk about the Hurricane Hunter mission maybe Saturday. Where we will be is more or less open to the public so you don’t need Mil ID/ base access. It’s been 15 years since I came to San Antonio as a young Lieutenant and this Saturday I pin on Lieutenant Colonel... it’s been a strange ride. If anybody has a Lambo Huracan would love to try and do a pic with one of our Hurricane Hunter planes, that might be a challenge getting it on the flight line but I can try and coord that. If the SA crew doesn't want you, you are more than welcome to park somewhere here in DFW and we will get a group out! And yes, I have several Huracan , you can even choose the color! Congratulations on your advancement as well! Steve
Excellent. If I was in town, I'd be there. What a great invitation. How does that differ from the AWACs of the 1980s? I will never forget the Commerce Secretary telling me what an experience to fly in/through a hurricane. Thanks for your service, be safe, and congrats on the Lieutenant Colonel rank!
Awacs is more like big air traffic control that identifies battlefield threats and coordinates air traffic, it’s a variant of a Boeing 707 with a big radome on top. We fly a variant of the C-130 and punch through the middle of hurricanes gathering data and dropping sensors. thanks!
Sorry I missed this thread. Old USAF guy, even flew Hercs for bit. Would have loved to tour your rig.
