Hello I’m a new member of this community and need your help on my tr diff problem. regarding this kind of matter, I found many topics and comments on the board so i would have a non-ferrari-made diff but there is no information of this kind of diffs in japan. does anyone know where to perches a good diff? thanks in advance Image Unavailable, Please Login toshi Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
sad to read your first post about this broken diff so one more try to get in contact with modena engineering in australia is this a "normal" TR or a koenig competition TR? I know that some koenig competition are in japan but not know anybody there. walter koenig told me there are some owners in japan with those competitions and he wanted to give me contact details but before he did so he unfortunatly died
Hi Toshi! So sad, I know how you feel. Luckily it looks like your crown wheel hasn't been affected. I sent you a PM!
thank you for your reply! My TR is a “normal” one though wheels, sheets and some parts are modified. I haven’t heard about koenig competition TR in japan. Genuine Koenig tuned or “koenig look” Mercedes are some time seen.
i’m novice guy how to see PM? i retry on my PC. thank you! Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Turbo Joe's recommendation is excellent and Newman who is on this Forum makes another awesome piece !
Newman's part is stellar. Quality abounds and you know it will fit. There is so little tolerance for error in setting these up, you know this one will work. This was the first differential I have ever set up in my life and we nailed it the first time.
Welcome to the club man! LOL. Sorry you had to join it but the broken Diff is the true badge of honor for all serious TR enthusiasts! Be sure to report your mileage for our Database.
Hi guys Thank you for welcoming me. actually I got in touch with Newman but at that moment he had no stock. So now i’m talking with some suppliers I will report when i decide which one i will buy and what will happen. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Hi guys I’m now considering whether NOS part No. 155099 or non-ferrari-made diff. some say 155099 is better than old diff, some say as bad as old one. I’m also talking with Gripper Differential and Modena Engineering. how about your opinion? genuine or not? toshi Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
How long does it take to install the new diff once the engine is already out? An extra 5 hours? An extra 25 hours?
Try T Rutlands as well. If you damaged anything else they can probably sell you a case and new bearings, syncros, etc to help. Just a thought.
if all the adjustment with the old diff will fit - then yes if you have to adjust all then may be not more than 15 h you will dismantle the complete gearbox? then you will need more than 25 h

Hi guys, So far my mechanic got all the parts to fix including a good diff. BUT he found the diff side support? LH diff cover could not be used because its center hole which shall hold a bearing so tight is too loose. looser than so calls hand fit. Both the diff cover and the bearing are Ferrari made genuine parts. it’s not a great news, but we are taking a little steps for the goal. TOSHI Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
While a few people don't believe me, Timken bearings are NOT very accurately sized on the cups. You need to accurately measure the hole in the side cover, and also accurately measure the bearing CUP OD. The difference between a press fit and a sliding fit is only 1 thousanths on an inch. Tolerances for the OD of Bearings are unfortunately more than that. As a machine tool builder, I KNOW how much these cups vary in size. Most automotive shops don't have the capability to accurately measure bore size, and compare to the cup. Don't jump to the conclusion that your side cover is the wrong size. I HAVE the Timken bearing engineering book that has the figures for tolerance on size of the cups used in the Testarossa. It's .0015 a SHOCKINGLY huge variance. Buy a couple of more bearing cups, if you can find them cheaply and see if any are tighter.
I wonder about this size variations. until now all bearings from timken I had have been outside diamater excatly the same to 1/100 mm. but those 0.0015 inch are also shocking for me so until now then I think had always good luck? nevertheless I wonder if you would buy such bearing ( at F you only get the complete bearing, so in - and outside ) from ferrari if those also vary so much in outside diameter? if so then no wonder why the diffs often are breaking
I did a survey of bearing cups ten years ago, when I noticed variances. I bought Timken brand bearings made in the USA, which frankly are hard to find. Other Timken bearings made in Brazil were also supplied. I also bought Koyo taper roller bearings to compare with. These cups varied in diameter by over a thousanths. The USA made cups- SEEMED to be close to the specified diameter, while the made in Brazil Timken bearings were large. I have a Testarossa side cover and the bearing on my granite surface plate. I'll check and see what measurements they are, and give them in metric and imperial sizes. I'll also locate my Timken bearing engineering handbook, and verify what the tolerance is for these bearings. I was looking at it a few months ago when Jamie was doing his differential. All parts have tolerances for size. Whether it's Timken bearings or the Ferrari side covers, if you get unlucky you COULD get a bearing on the small side of the tolerance and the side cover bearing bore on the high side, and have a loose fit. I'm loosely using the Timken brand as the bearing supplied, but it MAY be another brand. The differential I have apart has French manufactured Timken cups. It's nice to have new parts that assemble correctly, but for a small amount, you can coat the cup with a Loctite product called bearing mount.
Wow, how Ironic. Today is the first time I've logged into Fchat in a long long time. And this is the first post on the TR thread. So sorry to see this happened to you too. Your diff looks EXACTLY like mine did. I'm sure there have been more of these since I logged in last. And I'm sure there are still the nay-sayers who think this isn't a factory flaw. Well that was a short and sweet visit. I'll stop back by in a year or so and see how many more there are.
