While doing a little maintenance on my 355 I discovered that the muffler heat shield was damaged. Apparently the muffler had become dislodged and was rubbing against it wearing through the aluminum foil and buring off the resin in the shield substrate leaving only the glass fibers is spots.

After checking the price on a new shield ($1000) I decided I would repair rather than replace. Using glass mat and resin I covered the worn areas and then painted with aluminum paint.

After a little research I found some suitable heat shield material from Design Enginering Inc. (DEI). 10 mil aluminum bonded to a fiber glass heat mat with high temperature adhesive backing. The finished shied is shown below with old covering. Total cost, about $100.

DEI makes a wide variety if heat and sound shielding. Highly recommended. Check it out. (No affiliation.) https://www.designengineering.com/

    Nice work John!

What is the insulation heat rated to?

I tried something similar with adhesive backing and the adhesive did not withstand the heat. Did you use rivets as well as per factory to secure it?

Thanks Elliot. Admittedly, looking at your car has been a motivating factor for me. This all started when I decided to repair and refinish all the under trays on my car.
