Hey folks, so I priced out the cost of rebuilding/recharging the stock A/C system, and for a negligible bump up in cost, I could get a Classic Auto Air A/C system-which I did. I'm making my way thru the install(the two supply hoses to the engine bay were definitely harder than the coolant lines on the drivers side!), and have a question: the compressor was out of the car when I got it back. I don't know much at all about A/C systems in cars, so I can't tell if it's ok for me to disassemble the rest of the system(condenser/evaporator/etc), or if I need to contact a remediation specialist for the rest of it. I know R12 is pretty horrible for the environment, and the last thing I want to do is to start opening up hoses all willy nilly. If the compressor/engine bay hoses were already wide open, am I good to go? Thanks for the tips.

I believe if the compressor is out the system is fully discharged.

If you've got the compressor out, then the system has already lost all refrigerant.

Ok, thanks folks. I appreciate it. I'll progress forward with full disassembly of the rest of the system.

Just be sure to tape over any connection or hose ends- you need to keep dirt out of the system
