The original should be plated like the rear of it.Possibly black nickel. Im presuming its been polished.Chrome horses came later . !994??.Seems some had the flat type and others the profile type. The flat type was also fitted to the Testarossa. One of those factory build oddities but more likely flat type to earlier cars like yours. Ive seen other 1990 cars with them fitted. Many owners retro fitted the chrome type for looks.
    This is mine. 91TB.

Matte black would have been standard on a 1989-1990 car, like shown on Pangea's picture. Most seems to have been switched over to the sculpted chrome, like on the later 348 Spiders.

Your flat one appears either aftermarket, or a front 328 cavallino. I've not seen the "flat" ones on the back of a 348 before.

Here is the flat one listed for the Testa. There are plenty of pics about with these fitted to 348s plus I know a couple of guys over here who's cars had them fitted from new. Both have changed to chrome though. Its definitely not wrong but as I said probably an early thing. I would guess they had no stock ready of the profiled items for the builds or a harmless mistake?? Who knows. Click on the small pic. The year adds up.

That's great info thanks! Looks like the early ones were fitted with early Testa types in black, I suspect mine has had the black finish scraped off and polished at some point but must be original fitment.

I think I'll fit the shiny one for now because I do think it looks better, but then keep the flat one stored for return to originality and maybe refinish in black at some point.

That would be great for comedy value, I had to look it up because I don't think we got those in the UK

Are you looking to sell the aluminium flat version?

Looks very similar to the front cavallino of the 328 grille.

I have stumbled on this thread as i'm trying to find out what my 93 tb should have as standard? https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/ferrari/62984300?id=45472
I think from research the early cars (89,90,91) had the flat black horse (61766400 Horse Motif Flat) on the back and no horse on the front.
Later cars (91,92,93) with modified suspension and weight distribution (battery in the front) had the black sculpted ones (62984300 Prancing Horse Motif Black) on the back and no horse on the front.
And the Spider and upgraded GTB/S/C cars (93/94) had the chrome (61316900 Horse Motif) on the back and chrome (60032109 Motif Prancing Horse H75mm Chrome) on the front.

Would be good to get a few other opinions on this, as it seems to be that they changed it each time the car was upgraded?

The flat ones were Testarossa. The moulded black ones were original for the early 348.

I never knew that. Mine is 91 with the black moulded one, and none on the front.

Ah, I believe that's as it left the factory.. Out of interest and to try and prove my theory above, does your car have battery up front?

    Interesting thread.

My '89, 82641 had black and molded when the car had 10k miles. I keep a photo journal of '89s....i'll look through some others.

Seems it may be only a handfull of very early cars that had the flat black horses then..

Indeed, Speciale came with the chrome 3d one and front cavilino like the Spider.
I think it was black then switched to the chrome chrome 3d sometime in 92/93 MY

One of the POs of my car had chrome cavilinos put on both front and back. I removed the front one and had the back one stripped and powder coated back to black.
