1st time out of my garage since 1993! Very nervous!!
Nice day in the mountains-- sorry about my Dino blocking the view. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I will speak for myself (and hopefully others), why the hell can’t we do a better job on at least this thread? Shawn
Rick- I have owned my Dino since 1974, when I was making all of $6,000 a year working as a government engineer, and have used it as a regular driver since that time. In the mid-'90's I pulled her off the road for about 10 years while I slowly restored it- I am slow but performed my own welding, motor rebuilt, and bodywork/final paint prep like most of us did in the earlier years of this forum. Never thought I would be an owner that would run my Dino down to the point where it had to be restored- but I drove it all of the time. During the restoration, I converted to the Euro look which was not the blasphemy it is if you were to do so today. This explains why my US Dino has Euro turn signals. But I love that look and I have all of the original metalwork to put it back to US specs for the next owner. I was surprised how much rust work I had to fabricate since I only got caught in the rain a few times and it was always under some sort of shelter all of its life. I retired to Western NC so it is very easy for me to find a wonderful set of roads for day trips. I get it out on the road as much as I can. Here is what my garage looked like in 1975-- and a photo of my restoration in the same tiny garage.- and the space my friend let me have in his restoration shop for me to perform the bare metal bodywork and paint. That is quite something. I certainly don't have the skills to take something like that on. It must be very rewarding to have done the restoration your self. Keep driving and enjoying your Dino. She is a masterpiece...
Rick- Thank you for the kind words. One of my major hobbies for many years was restoring 356 Porsches, which helped me to build up the tools and the skills to take on my Dino. Many members on this forum have restored their Dinos and have shared the process. I did not join this forum until I had finished mine. I would have benefited greatly from their earlier threads if I had joined earlier. Of course, Jon has set the standard in sharing the process on this forum. I am glad I did restore my Dino when I was still in my late 40's. I am in my 70's now and last year I was installing new OEM Euro headlights, a left Euro turn signal housing, and a newly fabricated Timevalve muffler. The constant getting up and down messed with my broken back and I seriously thought it was time for surgery. I doubt if I could do that restoration now. These days I mostly work on motorcycles- on a lift.- much easier on the back Image Unavailable, Please Login
I bought a rotisserie and a mid-rise lift, saved my back!!!! Nice bikes Mark, I've been working on a '79 Ducati 900ss this summer but I have a Dino on the lift, so I'm back on the ground scrabbling about again...
DGT- Rotisseries are back savers for sure. They were just getting popular after I finished my 356s and the Dino. Hope you show a thread of your restoration. A square case SS- wonderful bike. Love the bevel heads. My first Ducati was a MHR---.-then on to an 851----- then on to 20 years of restoring and tracking '89-'94 4-valve factory Corse's. I gave up tracking at 64 (at Barber my favorite track) as my back made me worry about crashing. Please excuse the non-Dino content photos-- but perhaps other gearheads also like racing motorcycles. I drove the 90 miles down to Concorso yesterday - nice trip down at 630am, but lots of traffic on the way back. Car behaved beautifully as always - it’s the driver that’s getting creaky. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Was Concorso crowded? I count at least (9) Dino's in your photo. My Dino is awaiting install of a NOS Ansa exhaust I located.
it was more crowded than I thought it would be, given covid. I heard numbers like 600 cars. Fair number of Dinos, parked next to more modern F-cars - 360/430/550/575. The 308s were farther away.
I drove mine 450km today. I made a new carb needle for a 1910 Cadillac so I delivered it and set up the carb at the same time. Perfect Dino driving day. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
On Friday I had the chance to join a nice get together on the Mainz-Finthen Air Base. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I drove my 74 GTS today I also am celebrating having finished an 8 year build of a 1956 Cadillac rest-mod here are some pics
Nice trip today through the Danish countryside together with the big boy in his new toy. The Spitfire Mark 2 from 1967 is his first ''real'' sports car. Funny enough also my first choice some 38 years ago, though I opted for a Mark 3. Scary so fast time goes. I can not express enough how big a smile I get on my face whenever I drive the Dino. So easy driven, so fun and a perfect choice for driving on small narrow roads. Best, Peter Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Not much activity in the 246 section lately so I will add a bit of car porn for your entertainment. I visited a classic car gathering a few days ago and today I got a nice present in my mailbox from a photograph that was around at the same show. I really like the shots and hope you all enjoy them as well. And yes, Rob's engine light is stilling shining! Grigio Ferro really is the most wonderful colour on a Dino (he says hoping he picked the colour right!)
Your are spot on: Grigio Ferro Metallizzato 106-E-8. The cars original color was Bianco Polo Park (White), though he color of the cam covers is still the original grayish / greenish color and that I'm very proud of. Best, Peter
Drove mine today hard just back from nut and bolt resto. 73 246 garage find 35 yrs sitting no use before. Me
