Don't use brakekleen, use electrical contact or cleaner spray. Here is what I did and as a plus, it protects from heat. Of course I will be addressing the leak shortly now. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/alternator-shield-diy.604393/
Got it- thank you. Will definitely need to work on a heat shield once winter gets here. In the meantime, if oil had been getting into the alternator, if I spray it thoroughly with the electric contact spray, should the problem (if that was the root cause) be cleared-up if cleaned thoroughly enough, or does the oil cause a permanent problem?
I see videos where people clean them and there is no issue after. In your case its hard to say, if the issue is a component got damaged then cleaning it wont help. Give it a shot!
The only part of the alternator that can be affected by oil and cause malfunction are the carbon brushes and the slip rings. If they are contaminated with oil, I don't think spraying from outside will "wash" them. I would remove the alternator cover and spray directly to the brushes/rings if found oily.
