Are there any tricks to selling an exotic and avoiding ‘tire kickers’? Auctions, consignments….lose on both I would think. but what if you wanted to sell it yourself? regards.
If you want to avoid the hassle of the tire kickers and tourists, use a broker or consignment to a dealer. You'll probably net the most by selling it yourself but you will have to endure legions of worthless human flesh to do it. Call Mike at @Yellow Compass if you want to use a good, honest broker.
Whatever you do, don't let anyone drive it until it's bought and paid for. We don't need it getting out how good of drivers cars they are and sending prices out of control. I want to add a second one someday.
BringaTrailer is by far the best platform to sell on right now. $350 total out of pocket including their photography. 7-day auction. Scan and show all documentation in the listing to eliminate most of the dumb questions. Easy deal.
Great if you're a dealer but for the "regular guy" type sales, you might wait three months or more if they accept your car into their auction. As far as I know, you can't set your own reserve either. They set it for you, or force you to sell without reserve. If you've got the time, BaT does seem to sell cars at good prices though.
BaT does bring the boys to the yard. They have a wonderful ~ or rather loyal audience. Some cars will be placed in queue for an extended period, but I have found that when listing cars of particular interest that they are rarely on hold for long. I would assume two weeks +/- after photo submission before you are live.
I would have said post in the forum of the make you are selling ...i bot all my thru forums Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
BAT seems like the place. I've said it before; great place to sell. But as a buyer-- not so much. Which means most cars go for far more than what I would expect or pay. And to be sure you still can get stung as a buyer. I have a credible story about a colleague who bought what appeared to be a really nice classic on BAT. The access to the seller is a plus when asking questions about the car and the comments sometimes also help when those commenting actually owned a similar or exact same model offered for sale. Good Luck!
I bet there is a way to sell as an individual… where buyer is by reference and appt only. p rhaps to a fellow f chatter or other car club.
My main piece of advice to avoid time wasters is to not get sucked into email back and forth. You can waste hours responding to long lists of questions in an email that could be resolved quickly and efficiently with a phone call. Serious buyers are willing to pick up the phone. Answer the first email with a polite request to continue the conversation by phone then; if they never call, then they were wasting your time anyway. You also get a chance to learn a lot more about your buyer by having a chat with them.
I see it the opposite, BSers always want to get you on the phone to rattle off nonsense rather than just write factual information in an e-mail.
Yeah, I can see that perspective, but you can usually work that out quickly in a phone call and close down the conversation. Emails can rattle back and forth for weeks.
I agree. Plus I like to have a record of everything. If you sell it yourself, I would not give anyone a test drive without a copy of driver's license, refundable deposit and agreement or something of that nature. I let a couple stupid kids take my GTO out when I was selling and heard burnouts all of the neighborhood. Never again.
On the subject of test drives, I fully agree on the insurance aspect, but it always baffles me when sellers let people test drive cars unaccompanied. In the example of the GTO above, the insurance is really incidental to the burnouts. Had you been there, you clearly wouldn't have let it happen.
when I bought my gated 360..... the little consignment shop in Dallas just threw me the keys and said check it out.... nobody came with me..... they were holding the keys to my amg product at the time. so beware of consigning your car....... the care they take of your car ....
I think we're now into the realms of exploring some interesting cultural differences between car buying in the US vs the UK.
I never claimed it was an exotic, I was using a personal story to attest to the need to require more out of test drivers before letting them take your performance car out. But thanks for your input.
