I feel better to keep it as it is due to rare oil change or maybe once a year. its 1 time job for whole year
Does the 458 have the service reminder wrench come up on the dash when it is time for service? If yes, how do you go about resetting it?
Thanks. Is the tool Ferrari specific or will the scan tool I have for scanning codes and resetting the check engine light work? I used it on both my 360 and 430 but not sure if I can reset the service reminder with it on my 488.
I know Ferrari SDX will work and Leonardo. I want to try my Launch X431 on my buddies 458 but he just had it dealer serviced while having a recall done.
Thanks. I have an Actron that I have used on past Ferraris. Curious of anyone has had any luck with one of these.
Not sure which Actron you have. I have one (it was a fairly inexpensive one) and it will not reset the oil-change reminder.
Excellent write up I will never do this because I am not mechanically inclined but I’m sure many here can use this and do it.
Love posts like this, they make me feel more comfortable shopping for a 458. I’ve always felt much more comfortable with the quality of my own work than dealer work. Especially on stuff like this.
You need a tool for it. The problem is that the confirmation is hard to come by on which tools do the job. So far the only confirmation I could find, is on a youtube video (super car normal guy, or something like that). He does the oil change and then uses a Launch X431 Pro Mini to reset the light. I ordered one, and will update the thread weather or not I have success. Unfortunately it is a little expensive (I got it on e-bay for about $650 after tax). I will update on the 458 maintenance thread, so check there. I'm probably going to do it some time next week.
The Launch X431 Pro Mini DOES work. Here is the thread that I updated with info: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/diy-maintenance-458-thread.595191/page-3
The guy in this Ricambi sponsored video actually walks through the reset using his Launch tool towards the end. Very cool. Who is this guy? Is he on Fchat?
I found that removing and re-installing the under tray is made much easier, and does not require a helper, if you 1) drive the car up onto two stacked 2x6 inch pieces of lumber (so tires are raised about 4 inches off the floor) and then 2) use six paint cans to sustain the under tray. Once all retaining screws are removed, the under tray rests on the paint cans, and is suspended roughly one inch below the bottom or the car. This makes re-installation easy because you can slide the undertray around and align it just right for the screws and the vent holes. It also makes it easy to pull the rubber drain hoses through the holes in the under tray before you put all the screws in place. it also makes this a one-man job, which is a great thing for somebody like me who doesn't play well with others. OK, so I changed my own oil this weekend and used the instructions on drilling access holes to get to all three drain plugs. Here are some observations and mistakes made by me - driver of the short bus!!! First - this is Critically important. Do not print out the diagram and put it on the ground as a guide to drill the access holes - it will not be correct as you will be on the wrong side of the car. Not slamming the OP that took a lot of time to develop and publish the information but it would have been SUPPER helpful to put drivers side and passengers side on the diagram. When you print out the diagram and put it on the ground (with the front of the diagram facing the front of the car and the rear towards the diffuser) -this will not be correct as it will be a mirror image and you will drill on the wrong side - ask me how I know. The proper way is to take the printout and tape it to the tray on the bottom of the car. After drilling one incorrect hole, I decided to just concentrate on the main tank drain. Very easy to find on the passenger side of the vehicle by using a flashlight or HF scope and looking down towards the rear of the car through the vent hole. I drained the oil out of the main tank plug. I know the some people will say -but you did not drain the two crankcase plugs!!!! It may have held 2 oz of oil - based on the amount of oil the car took to reach full. Be careful when you pull the plug as the oil will come out like water - very fast. The plug I used was a 3 inch Cap Plug (that is the name of the company that makes the plug). I used a small dremel to clean the hole before inserting the plug. All very easy.
Hi All, Just completed my first oil change on my 2015 Italia and also made the drain hole mods at the same time. The mods are actually easier than removing/installing the pan! I followed the diagram above and it went very smoothly. A few notes: - On my 15, the pan is a little different. There's a rectangular opening that intersects 2 of the 3" holes (see pics). This actually worked out well as I could see the two drain ports and easily confirm I had the holes centered. - I drilled the holes with the pan in place on the car. I could see two drain ports from the rectangular opening mentioned above, and could see the third from the duct opening. - I used a string stretched between the two bolts and the flat parts of the ducts to create the reference lines shown in the diagram above. From those I could take the measurements and position each hole. - I first drilled small pilot holes to confirm I had each hole location correct, and then drilled the 3" holes. - I'm using QuickJacks that lift from the jack points of the car. Due to the design of the belly pan, this requires numerous lifts up and down, along with repositioning of the jacks, to remove/install the pan. With this mod done its simply lift, change oil, lower. This has to knock 75% of the time/effort off of an oil change. Thanks to @AZLambo and everyone else who has contributed to this thread! You guys are great for sharing your experience! I would *think* the oil drains are in the same location, but a while back I saw a pic of a Speciale belly pan on Reddit (attached). It was carbon fiber. I'm generally a go-for-it kinda guy, but could not bring myself to drill holes in that thing! With that said the general design looks like mine, at least at a glance. Though mine doesn't have those two hoses. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, I gather those are for brake venting?, do yours connect to the brakes from the top?, maybe thats the difference there. Carbon Fiber, looks expensive, must be much lighter I suppose.
Mine has nothing there. Here's an example from ebay that's like my 15 Italia: I'll trade you mine with the holes already drilled Image Unavailable, Please Login
