360 Annoying Rattle Solved!

    Another sign our cars are getting old. Mine recently developed a loud “clack” sound over bumps. It sounded like the spider top assembly was loose, or some part of it. I couldn’t find anything wrong, though, and I had an issue with the side flaps not closing properly. So, I sent it to my tech.

    He fixed the top easily, as it only needed an adjustment. The right flap was out of sync with the left, so both wouldn’t close. But he was perplexed by the noise, as he could find nothing loose regarding the top, either.

    It turned out that the fuel evaporation canister was loose. Its mounting point on or near the frame rail sent the sound into the cabin as if from the top mechanism. The canister’s rubber or foam insulation had deteriorated, so that it was metal on metal. He re-did the insulation and all is well.

    I also had an annoying rattle from the backend. But it was more of a resonance as you went through the gears. It was an easy fix…the lid that covers the engine needed adjusting… That is the rubber pieces that prevent the lid from rattling just needed screwing out half a turn also.

    I'm thinking #6 might be the insulation the original thread writer was talking about.

    I meant which of the diagrams of the vehicle is that a close-up from? I went through them and don't see it. I'm sure as soon as he indicates which one it is, it will be 'how did I miss it!'

    John, for an F430 spider it’s diagram number 12. The system is a bit different from the 360.

    Thank you Allen, it wasn't till a little while ago that I caught on the original pic is a 360. Appreciate it.

    Still not quite sure where it is, I'll snoop around.
