For me "timing" had nothing to do with it............................coming up with the money was always it!!!!
I don’t know how many 250 GTEs and 330 2+2s I passed up when I was debating those vs a TR in 2001. Bought a TR. Also Miura SV or Daytona for $80k. could of should of.
I was offered a white/red Vignale Spyder in finishing up restoration in Canada for $180kCAD in 2007. I’m sure you probably can tell us where that car is now. I bought a 3 pedal 575 instead so not all was lost.
In 1979 I bought my 1977 930 Turbo Carrera with 1,700 miles on the clock for $32,500 and thought I got a fair deal considering the mileage and all. Still have it but the value didn’t go up much until 2010 or there about. Under one’s that got away that I could have had In 2008 I could have bought - Porsche Carrera GT with about 5k on the clock for $280+ tax/fees, a first generation Ford GT with a couple thousand miles on the clock for also under $300k and topper is could have bought Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso restored for $750k in 2011. That said I was in the market for a car at the time those cars were available and thought thr Ferrari was over priced @ $750k the following year I heard the car sold for $1.3m and prices went sky high after that.
275GTB short nose for $6,500, 1970 Porsche 356B Abarth Carrera GTL for $1,800 plus my 1970 911T Targa, 1971 Not that I passed on the cars, I just couldn’t put the $$ together.
I think John Bond, Jr., bought it when I couldn’t. I don’t know who owned it after that. Believe it or not the seller had two of them; one with the original 1600cc motor and the other had a Carrera 2 replacement motor.
Is that what Dean Watts had? I remember seeing some unusual Porsche at some vintage race gatherings - likely Willow Springs and/or Sear Point.
I offered on behalf of the owner 250 LM 5909 for $100,000 in 1977/1978. He had been debating on selling this LM or his 250 GTO 4091. Eventually he sold the LM to Switzerland.
I know the name but I honestly don’t know if he owned a GTL. I believe the one I missed later appeared on the cover of Porsche Panorama.
In 2013 after selling my 599 I briefly considered buying a "classic" since the car would not have been used much (I relocated abroad at the time). I saw two 365 GT 2+2 ("Queen Mary") advertised for € 75,000... Current prices are about three times that.
While not a Ferrari, back in 1977 I could have bought a '63 Fuelie Split Window Corvette, in great shape, for $3,000. Perry
Not a Ferrari but a friend of mines offered his 1963 Alfa Giulia Spider 1600 to my father, 12 years ago for 30K€… 22 000km, original hard top, clean history. My father waited 2 weeks and called him to say he was taking it, but it was already gone!
Speaking of John Bond Jr. When Alan Johnson Porsche + Audi opened around 1974, John was running the parts department there. I used to talk with him for hours on end and listen to his stories about his escapades with his Mom and Dad testing cars. One was he was sitting on his dad's lap while his dad drove a Birdcage Maserati. I finally had to ask him who the heck he was. Then of course he told me about the Road and Track connection and it all made sense. John did have a silver Abarth Carrera with Fuchs alloys, and it was featured in a magazine call Porsche Sport and likely other publications. John had the inside track on twin plug cars and had a good handful of others. It's been 48 years so I don't won't speculate what I think he told me he had but one for sure was a 911R which I saw in person. At that same time there was a place in the Barrio in San Diego called Scott's Porsche parts. As I recall he had 4-5 Carrera engines sitting on his bench and told me. "That is my retirement program" Now there's a guy who won't be saying coulda, woulda, shoulda!!
Speaking of San Diego, I was stationed there 1970-71. At that time SoCal was truly Porsche heaven. I got to know Dick Barbour, and my Porsches were serviced at Dieter Vongher’s independent shop.
It was magical for sure!!. Porsche ruled in SoCal. Brings back so many great memories.. I remember in those days you could pick up the Saturday edition of the L.A. Times and see pages of Porsches for sale. An that was when there was only 356's, 912's and 911's.
Summer, 1972; 250SWB at Wide World of Cars for ~$6000. Double my budget, so I bought my first 330GT 2+2 (s/n 7895) for $3200. Image Unavailable, Please Login
While in school I nagged my father to purchase a 300SL Gullwing. He purchased a brand new 1978 300SD Turbo. The same amount of money would just about buy you a driver 300SL Gullwing. He paid cash for the 300SD and had more than enough for a top condition Gullwing. The driver 300SL roadsters started in the bottom 20's - asking. __________ While a freshman in college I had one of the early complementary FML paper flyers. __________ 2004 75K. Do you purchase a really nice Boxer, or the 250 PF Coupe (a restored maroon example with tan interior), for the same price. Door # 1 or Door # 2 _________ At the same time, the SV was priced 150-200K over the base P400. Best modern story I know. Sunday morning at the supermarket, I read a few pages in a car auction magazine. Approximately twenty-twenty five years ago someone by mistake put a Porsche 904 or 906, in a American muscle car auction, at no reserve. The car hammered for 150K.
Romano, Yes, true. But I did buy my second 330GT 2+2 (s/n 7647) in 1987 for $27,500. Image Unavailable, Please Login
