hey everyone , i was having a great time at the national ferrari owners day until i decided it was time to head back home. Upon leaving the site i all of a sudden lost drive ! ended up having the car recovered back home ... after little poking around i found this problem... all of the bolts have snapped clean off holding all the flange ect to the side of the gearbox.. what are my options here ? is it simply removed snapped threads and apply news bolts or will there be issues inside the box? Has anyone ever seen this before i couldnt believe my eyes! any thoughts ?
You are going to have to take the gearbox out, you just dont know what else is damaged. You might get away with replacing the bolts but something has caused this and you could do a lot of damage just refitting the bolts.
Strange they sheared off like that. Was car driving shifting fine before failure? Any vibrations? Did anyone else drive the car recently? was this serviced recently? Clutch job? gl
The car has been behaving normal not had any recent transmission work apart from fluid change ect last year with its service...
See if the trans mount has totally disintegrated. It’s below the air box. There are bigger experts here who can chime in… but I’m thinking if trans mount and motor mounts are totally gone.. engine and trans were put out of alignment under load… and bolts sheared…. Perhaps a planned weak point. In which case just tap out sheared bolts then new trans mm’s.. and good to go. This is an optimistic case.
Take a look at post #6 to see what is inside. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/148094370/ From here, I don't see how yours could be that loose and sloppy without suffering some sort of catastrophic failure of the differential and or the splines on the output shafts... What did you hear when you lost drive? Anything like an engine/transmission failure in F1? Was there a puddle of oil and a trail leading to it? When you remove the undertray, look for metal chunks. Hopefully, I am wrong and someone just overtightened those bolts and they failed one by one until it fell out. I would take the transmission out and do a thorough inspection and rebuild where necessary.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post..... I had no warnings or anything I was driving along maybe about 25mph and all of a sudden a big thud! Followed by f1 transmission light coming on... I couldn't see any oil leaking out or anything very sudden.....then that's when I found the culprit.... Anyone nearby me in the UK want to give me a hand hahaha
Well isn't that a pickle! I'm in agreement with pulling the transmission. That.. and I'd look for an adequate used transmission to throw in there in its place.
It really is a pickle the whole jar infact.... It did cross my mind about another box and pulling the transmission as other parts will need a look over.. I just wanted to see what everyone thought when they see my unusual issue
Is the remainder of the bolts still in the gearbox case? Does it look like they’ve flopped around as though the bolts came loose then sheared off? You’ll be able to see fresh metal inside the bolts holes if that’s the case. Can you get an Easy Out in there to remove the remainder of all the bolts? If it were mine, I’d put it back together, get it on jackstands and rotate the wheels by hand. If no scary noises, start the car and run it on jackstands. Be sure to chock the front wheels . If there weren’t any bad noises when it failed, there shouldn’t be now. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I wonder if this is the result of something simple, like the bolts weren't torqued after a clutch change and they just wiggled free.
You normally don't touch those bolts ..that is the side cover transmission .. my theory based in that video is the side bearings gave and twisted the cover .. again hard to tell from video The CV joint is normally disconnected for a clutch and that as far as I can tell is ok If my theory is correct one may beg to ask where is the fluid ..could it be it went dry Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
I would be careful with that. When I put mine back together I thought I would see if the wheels spin okay. However, I heard some clunks as I slowly let the clutch out. I think the CV joints are at too much of an angle with the wheels off the ground. I did not continue with that experiment.
And once again thanks to everyone for your input it's greatly appreciated, I will keep everyone updated as I go along. Strange thing regarding the trans fluid I had it all changed April last year so should of had plenty in.. I will try to gain better access to the side of the box and try to get the remaining snapped threads out...will also try things very carefully as I don't want to cause any more damage ect.... Keep your inputs flowing.... Again if anyone in the UK wants to lend a hand shout up haha
If; for whatever reason some of the bolts loosened up and fell off, and you had only a couple holding on the shaft to the gearbox, it makes sense what you see... If that was the case, I don't think there would be damage to the gearbox; just remove the sheared bolts, replace, flush fluid in gearbox and go for a spin. Try the simple things first. Yeah, also check mounts while you are there.
Aren't there supposed to be bend over plate type locks on those cap nuts?? There are lock plates on most other CV flanges I've seen. Maybe someone forgot to install them. Image Unavailable, Please Login
