I think someone got the better end of that deal, but it wasn't Paul. 😊 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Symbolic sold out to O"Gara Coach April 1, 2015. O'Gara is the RR , Aston, Lambo dealer in Los Angeles. Symbolic now operates as Symbolic Int'l. , next to their old service location in San Diego. Gary Bobileff
Thanks Gary. Can you tell me, I remember 20 years ago there was a coffee house called 'Stella Bella' across the street from Symbolic and next to that coffee house was a singular showroom/building of some sorts that was part of Symbolic. Does that still exist?
Don't know about the coffee shop, but the building across the street is the office of Jim Lyons, Sports Car Company. Gary Bobileff
Sorry, but I know nothing about Paul Least and a 328 GTS other than what has been posted by Bob Z: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/248842-post7.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143914126-post24.html
Does the car Marcel is showing still have its' Dutch plates? It appears like that. Saw it in Holland in the late eighties (?), red at the time. It was said to have a 3-valve competition engine, and I learn now that Ferrari also tried the combustion-chamber in the piston-crown lay-out. The Jaguar V-12 had the flat-head lay out from its' inception in 1971 to 1981, when it received flat pistons and a Michael May designed Fireball cylinder head, with compression raised to 12.5:1. It made 299 HP from 5.3 liter displacement, with much improved fuel economy. This was known as the HE engine. Does anyone know what the power output of the Ferrari flat-heads was? Best, Jack.
It seems that they might have been regarded as "neither fish nor fowl" since the Daytona nose hadn't been revealed yet, so it might have been thought of as a modified 275GTB. Maybe an old ad in Road & Track? I bet once the Daytona came out some thought might have been giving to grafting on a Daytona nose to make it look "normal."
I'm curious, Wally, are you trying to write an article on historic asking prices of old Ferraris, or is this just a topic that fascinates you? This seems to be a line of questioning that you explore often.
11001 is for sale : 1968 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Prototype by Scaglietti | Monterey 2022 | RM Sotheby's (rmsothebys.com) Looking forward to reading the history of this car... compared to 10287.
Hopefully all the broken, questionable* and ill-fitting details are sorted before the auction, although based on listing photos, it might be a tall order. *Would be very interesting to see high quality/- resolution period, press presentation and/or Salon photos showing variety of details and compare them to many shown in the listing pictures.
Description has now been given : https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo22/monterey/lots/r0007-1968-ferrari-365-gtb4-prototype-by-scaglietti/1228649 Please comment...
I remember being with Gregg Young numerous times when he first bought this car. I also remember driving it a few times with him. Our biggest impression of the car initially was the tremendous amount of light inside the cabin, as the rear window was pushed far forward in the roof line as compared to a 275/ 4 cam. That made this car so unusual. It was an interesting mix of 275/4 and Daitona interior features. Lots of fond memories driving this car! Gary Bobileff
Although the RM Sotheby's description says what this car is, a 275 GTB/4 with a tipo 226 3.3 litre engine, and a prototype, it is not a 365 GTB/4 prototype as their headline says.
The Buffalo NY, ownership by Mr. Least is interesting. He sent the "Daitona" over to Toronto Ontario for service work at the Ferrari shop on Keele Street owned by Remo Ferri. This was long before the Ferri auto group became the official Ferrari dealer for Ontario, Canada. Sitting in the small showroom on Keele Street was one of the famous Gilles Villeneuve F1 race cars. Fine company for ☆11001☆ there!
We had this car in our inventory at Symbolic Motors back in the late-1990s. Even with their Tipo 226 3.3-liter 275 GTB/4-esque motors, we always referred to it (#11001), and #10287 with its unique 3-valve 'Heron' cylinder heads developed for improved emissions output, as the two 'Daitona' pre-production prototipos due to their "hodge-podge" of Daytona and 275 GTB(4) bodywork details.
I see. 10287 can be called a 365, as it is a 365 with a 4.4 litre engine, whereas 11001 is not, and is a 275 with a 3.3 litre engine.
