I knew a bit about the C4 ZR1's going into the video. Like Lotus designed the engine and Mercury Marine assembled them. Didn't know the low radar signature, done on purpose.
I had one of those C4 ZR-1's and it was a very good car. I did a few basic mods and it put down just over 400hp to the wheels on the dyno - pretty stout for a 375hp motor.
I've wanted one ever since they came out. I was 17 when they first came on the market. I had a 85 C4 at the time. So was an owner and Corvette fan.
Hi MAX930....yeah I really loved the ZR-1, mine was quasar blue metallic with tan interior, pretty rare colors. I had a set of headers and a chip from Geoff Jeal (one of the Lotus engineers), B&B Tri-Flow 3" exhaust, 4.09 rear gears, free flow air box, etc. It was a terrific combination, and the sound was a bit loud but awesome.
The ZR-1 was on Car Issues the other night on the GearHead Channel. Here is a 30 second trailer. Could not find the whole episode (probably 2019 vintage) anywhere, but this would be an interesting "toy" to consider IMHO. https://www.facebook.com/hooviesgarage/videos/car-issues-zr1/490665945020394/
Looks like a 91 ZR-1...the driver is Tyler Hoover, he's a big time youtube start now. And that's the Car Wizard in there too...
Similar story. I saved money and paid by bank check for a new 1990 Z-51 coupe with the bigger front brakes. The car had no insurance. The insurance was too expensive due to my age and driving record. No chance I could afford a new ZR-1. Those were selling for about double MSRP. During Hi School I daydreamed about the classic and contemporary Corvette models and knew all the RPO codes and advertised BHP.
I'm kind of looking for a C4 and sometimes consider getting a ZR1. Now waiting until I move houses soon. Don't need more stuff to move!
The C4 ZR-1 is a LOT of car for the money. The 1990 model year ZR-1 is most unique with the old style nose with the new style tail. Personally I like the later years as the updated front and rear treatment looks nicer - just my opinion. The ZF 6-speed trans is great but it is not designed for speed-shifting or similar abuse, if you wear or damage synchros, the parts to repair / replace can be a challenge...as can finding someone who can do the work.
