So you think they change formula and nothing to do with paying money to manufacturer?

 

Does Anybody know if Castro edge is any good oil? I was thinking about 5W50 since I'm in Florida with a hottter climate

 

I would not be concerned in a hotter climate ... not unless you track or consistently keep revs at 7k or so... but Castrol Edge is one of the top oils.. (the one for european vehicles, not the one which is only GM endorsed or so)

It is BMW recommended oil since forever... I think a Redline or group V oil would be better in hot climates, but that's just me.
... again, just depends on how you drive the car.

It is usually listed in the Safety Data Sheet, if you can find it. Some manufacturers don't provide it... Redline, some Motuls, Amsoil are all oils which are group IV/V enhanced. Most of other "synthetics" are usually group 3 oils...made of crude oil and refined.

 

...however, I just read about the Pennzoil Platinum Euro that it does meet the Ferrari specification, although it no longer has the horsy on it (click on Specifications):

i used to...impossible to tell difference in oil outside of the track so i just use whatever the shop im using has

 

Most oil from the parts stores will only be group 3. have learned alot from bobistheoilguy. And sticking with professional products that I do the homework on

I used it in my Shelby GT350R (now sold) but I had the feeling that the engine became noisier somewhat, could not explain why... stopped using it and went back to Ford recommended oil. Never used since.

 

I’ve never noticed any foaming, but I don’t track my 430.

 

If you search Ferrarichat..you will see it is a common compliant..Pennzoil states it is intentional to foam to protect better ..not sure if i buy it

I wonder if foaming is caused by higher oil level... Mine was close to the max when I changed it and it started foaming ( I had not enough initially with 8L of Redline, and I put in 1.5 and it was a little too much, ideally I would aim for mid way) . I will try to keep it just under mid way on my next change to see what happens.

Yes, and the reason I used it ... maybe I was wrong; maybe the thickness of the oil caused the hydraulic lifters in the GT350 engine to behave different, don't know.
The Ford 5w-50 oil becomes a 0w-30 very quickly in its' life span... degrades a lot from my own oil analysis. Maybe on purpose.

 

So Shell is the only oil that meets Ferrari requirements? My car was serviced when I bought it and the mechanic used Motul, but not sure which variant of Motul. I want to stick to what the mfg recommends, unless of course I cannot find it anywhere.

 

I think all oils today which are API SL and above, and ACEA A3 and more meet the requirement... see the plaque on the engine bay. Shell has a partnership with Ferrari making dealers to use it. I think there are better oils than that like Redline, etc. Motul is a very good oil, keep using it if you used it and it does not foam in the engine... just make sure it is the right weight.

 

I changed my oil yesterday with 5/40 Royal Purple (Euro formula), and very happy with the results. Back story, I started using RP in my ski boats (Mastercraft/Ski Nautique) on the advice of a Nautique engineer. The performance results/improvements in that environment are immediately noticeable...higher top end and smoother holding power at slalom speed. The 430 has never felt smoother to my butt now, but I also adjusted the PIS, so there's that. Regardless, my car has never felt so dialed in as it does right now.

 

In general, Shell oil sucks compared to the other alternatives. Kind of like Shell brake fluid, Shell coolant, etc.

 

I use Amsoil 5w40 European in nearly all the cars that I service.

The products that Ferrari recommends are based more on sponsorship agreements than any beneficial reason.
