terrible , but thats not what happened to Bob Dunn, it was an accident then their car hit a tree and caught fire they couldn't get out because of the accident itself . Tragic either way

Isn’t that what he said? That it caught fire and they were trapped inside?

    Yes that's what he said.

As Tarek explained however there was a bit more to the story so not a comparible scenario.

    Very sad!

Sure thats what he said, but the way he worded it made it sound similar to my situation that the car just caught on fire and they were trapped inside, he didn't mention it was a wreck. The tragic Dunn accident was a totally different situation not similar to mine!

I think it's a natural tendency to become imprecise with words when we discuss tragic events that have affected us deeply.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

One more reason to prefer a spyder? If the doors won't open you might be able to 'abandon ship' out the top. Some vintage racers won't race enclosed cars for fear of fire.

Part of the reason why I prefer to drive with the windows at least halfway open, if weather permits, is because part of me feels there's a good chance a helper won't be able to find the exterior or even interior door handles if I'm unconscious. How many people know how to find the exterior door handle of the 355 if never told?

That's why i have this in my car from now, my father gave it to me years ago and I laughed at him first but now understand his reasoning was right.

+1 for the hammer. I’d recommend going for the version with a built-in blade for cutting the seatbelt.

I have heard too many cases of people being trapped in their cars and dying. The one that really got me was a few years back: a young couple on their way to a classic mini meet in their 40-year-old mini. They got rear-ended on the highway rupturing the fuel tank. It was a very minor accident, but it was an old car. The inside of the car was doused with fuel, and the shunt was just enough to bend the body of their car and they couldn’t open the doors or roll down the windows. The fire didn’t start immediately, but they couldn’t get out. They were burned alive a few minutes later when the car burst into flames.

Get a hammer and hope you never need it, especially if you drive a classic.

Ken, that's why we keep our windows fully open when we're on the track, even if it's raining.

I like to wear a used NASCAR race/fire suit at track events rated sfi 3-2A/5...

...which have epaulet pulls if someone has to drag me out of the car.

Along with the Halon fire suppression system, NOMEX underwear, shoes, socks, gloves and balaclava, you're pretty well protected if the fire reaches the cabin.

    Here's an example...
