How about this one? Second prototype, tons of miles, but I still think pretty amazing! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-porsche-930-turbo-34/
people seem to get excited by it being the 2nd 3.3 litr 930 made.... ok....i dont see that being such a big whoop. but fine.
I guess it depends on your perspective. If you are buying the car as a daily driver or a key part of your personal transportation infrastructure, buying a prototype is probably a bad idea. It most likely has unique one-off parts and wiring and what not which could make it a real pain to maintain. On the other hand, as a piece of history-- wow! This car was probably driven by Dr. Porsche himself (Dr. Ferry Porsche, of course), along with a who's who of the Porsche team. I think that is pretty cool. If I owned it, I would certainly drive it some (and the mileage and repaint mean additional miles won't affect the value), but I would also appreciate the history it holds as an artifact.
I think it is very cool as a very early one it will have some "one offs" which will make it a pain for the average Joe but be neat for the enthusiast. Shame it was repainted to black from that dark red. .78K is a "ton of miles"?? I would think that is low as it is under 100K I think over 200K as a "ton of miles" in the Porsche world. 200K Porsche is = to 60K Ferrari.
It's not black, it is still dark red. I suppose you are right. The fact is a lot of those miles were put on by the factory in testing, according to the records.
It has been a while since this 78 0012 surfaced - https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/141904821/ The BAT photos nicely show the pre-production Oil Temperature/Pressure gauge with the labels for Temp and Druck that vertical vs. horizontal in all 78-79 930s. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm amazed this car isn't getting much interest on BaT. I would think the reserve would be at least $100k, but looking at the bidding so far, I'm not convinced it will get there. Part of the problem might be the location-- if it was in the US, I might be a bidder.
Just over $100k, and RNM... if it was a normal 78 930, I think that would be barely enough but being a documented prototype adds some value, in my opinion.

I would guess there are two possibilities: 1) It is a prototype, and they were testing that configuration 2) Someone along the way felt the need to replace that panel for whatever reason, and that was what they could get, and it's an old used car, so who really cares?
There is a question about the tire sizes on the latest BaT 930. Someone asked "Are the Fuchs original? Are the rears 7” or 8”? Was it typical to see 225’s on the rear of a ‘79 930 versus 245’s?" The answer from the owner is basically that is what was on the car when he bought it. What are the correct tire sizes for a 79 930?

It will be interesting to see how that one does. It's a nice color combination, although I think I like mine more.
Can anyone explain how the heat (or "climate control") on my 80 930 is supposed to work? It has a knob, which looks to be more or less the same as the knob that was in my 85 911 Carrera, and then it has a red lever. What does the knob do, and what does the lever do?
w/'79 car, recall knob as climate control, set that to temp and don't mess w/red lever - which operates in synch w/climate control ...
So does the red lever move? Mine seems to be stuck. Where should it be set? The knob seems to work about like the knob did in my 85 Carrera-- not really a "climate control" but rather just a heat control
I realized the red lever moves on it's own! Apparently it's purpose is to tell you how much heat the system is requesting, or at least that is as far as I can tell. My 930 didn't come with an owner's manual (and it would have been in German anyway), so I have to figure these things out on my own.
