No, it will bend a few valves and if iron break a few guides. Big difference between that and a destroyed engine.

What’s a valve job run DIY? Are there ever any signs before the belts go?

Let's say you replace 25% of the valves, all the valve guides, no pistons, no liners. So, $5,000 for a machine shop.
$3,000 for 30K service kit and two head gaskets plus some other gaskets.
$1,000 for misc (oil, filters, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant, you'll find some other stuff)

We are already at $9K and that is not a 40 hour job.

The 30k kit is $3,000?? I thought Hill Engineering sold one for like $1,700?

Of course, if a belt snaps it may not just bend some valves but actually break them…then you’ll have a valve head or two rattling around the cylinders doing untold damage to the pistons, heads and bores…now it’s a total rebuild.

Price the two head gaskets, water jacket gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust gaskets, oil drain pipe gaskets, head nuts, head nut washers, don't forget that special head nut socket and tool (they are no longer on loan).

$495 each, and you need two

Have you ever seen that even once on a 355? Never is the answer.

Head nuts and head nut washers???? Why on earth would you ever change those?

Even a valve head or two ratting around inside cylinders will only necessitate the replacement of two liners and pistons at most. I recently had a liner replaced, from the top, disconnecting the gudgeon pin rather than unbolting the rod from the crank. It wasn't that expensive.

Using quality tools will prevent damaging the nuts. Of all I have done or over seen I have never replaced either. I am doing 2 motors now and have ARP studs for both but reusing all nuts and washers.

Replacing the liner by removing the piston wrist pin, taking the piston out and the pulling the liner from the top? That is interesting. I would like to see that process. I have always removed the piston with rod from the crank shaft and made a plate to pound the liner out from its bottom.

As for your "not expensive" statement, that is a deep pocket you are speaking from? The last time I checked, the liner was close to $1000 each. You need one set of rings for one piston $400.

I don't have any pics of the process, but the respected indie who worked on my car over here in the UK have done it a dozen times now, obviously every time on #2 cylinder, so it's a proven process.

Cylinder liners are currently £443 from Maranello Parts. Rings are £200 for a single set of OEM, or Superformance will sell you a set for the whole engine for £649. I'm sure they'd split a set if you asked nicely, call it £100 for a single cylinder if they're nice to you, £150 if they're not. Half what you're quoting.

I buy from Ricambi so that I know where it's coming from. Yes, it's expensive but the risk is super high if it does not work. It's been a few years since i bought the liner though so prices may have changed,

In France, Ferrari says F355 belts can be done every 5 years, providing the car is used regularly

Reference? I don't disagree with the 5 year assessment - its what Pocono Sportscar recommends as well but that's not the same as an official Ferrari maintenance document.

I would trust the experience of an intelligent independent Ferrari mechanic w/ decades of exposure to 355's over an "official Ferrari maintenance document."
