The knob to the wing mirror control switch on my 2015 458 broke off :-( The knob and switch are a single part so the repair is to replace the entire part ($250ish) which requires the removal of the front left lower panel to gain access. Let me start by thanking @DoubleD33 for the original 458 dash disassembly post, @up4speed for posting the instructions on how to remove the specific panel and my buddy Denis @myricambi.com for expediting the OEM replacement part which came from Italy and for writing the original set of instructions back in 2013!

Step 1: Disconnect the battery by opening the panel in the passenger footboard and flipping the quick release switch on the left terminal (left hand drive vehicles).

Step 2: Remove the lower left panel that houses the wing mirror switch and headlight control switch. Reference post "458 Interior Removal" for instructions: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/458-interior-removal.620453/. I'm attaching the instructions pulled from @up4speed 's post. The 2015 model does have an allen head screw underneath the panel on the right which the must be removed prior to pulling the panel out.

Step 3: Pull on the panel straight back with force (& clean hands). I didn't use a plastic lever (bike tire replacement tool) as recommended or any tool to pry it out; I just wiggled the panel back and forth to prevent snapping any of the 4 plastic pins holding the panel in place. (Image 1)

Step 4: Remove the blue male power connector from the switch. Release the the black bracket holding the connector in place by moving it from vertical to horizontal (R to L). There should be no pressure. Now slip the connector out from the switch by pulling up on it. (Image 2)

Step 5: Remove the two (white) small Philips head screws holding the switch to the silver metal bracket. (Image 3)

Step 6: Remove the four (dark) allen head screws holding the metal bracket in place. The Allen wrench is the same size as that used to remove the single screw holding the panel in place; the first one you removed. (Image 3)

Step 7: Remove carefully the two washers on the left side of the switch that hold the switch firm to the metal bracket. I used a tiny flat head screwdriver alternating left side to right to wiggle them up. When reassembling I used the tip of a needle nose plier to press them back on so as to apply equal pressure and not break the plastic pin. (Image 4)

Step 8: Remove the metal bracket by using a small flat head screwdriver to separate it from the screw hole. (Image 5)

Step 9: Reverse the steps to put everything back together. I followed @up4speed's advice to lubricate the four plastic panel pins prior to reattaching. I found it helps to first align (not screw in) the single allen head screw you removed in Step 1 to help with popping in the panel.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery and follow the steps to reset the ECU.

    Voila!

And then refer to this post when you're new switch eventually goes sticky and you need to send it off to get fixed. [emoji16]

SoFLFerrari, great write up! This will definitely help people who are brave enough to work on the car, and will probably save them at least $500 in the process!

I did this on mine and found that all of the screws were seized. The head was just about to round on one so I stopped, had a think about it, then tried heating them with a large tip fitted in a soldering iron. I held it against the head of the screw for about a minute or two, tried them again and they came out easily.

The little washers which push onto the plastic posts are star lock washers - you can buy them on eBay. Just measure the diameter of the shaft with some callipers, it's about 3mm or something from memory.

Two screws securing it under the pinnacle, either side of the rev counter. Remove those, you then slide the whole top cover piece towards you to unhook it, and it then lifts off.

Hi everyone. To make sure I understand, the driver side binnacle and lower front panel comes off to change the wing mirror switch, correct?

GM Goodwinii - I saw your post yesterday but was caught up with the mad rush to get my Saturday chores done. To the best of my recollection the only thing I had to pull out was the panel which hosted the wing mirror switch. It pulls right out. Good luck with the fix - it's an easy and quick repair, but be deliberate. Even then, it shouldn't take you longer than an hour.

Ok, awesome SoFLFerrari. Thanks very much; I will get going on mine and see how far I get without removing the driver side binnacle. Thanks.

Anyone have a source for a replacement switch that is verified to be not sticky? I know StickyRX and some places sell pre-refinished parts but I'm not easily finding one for this. Seems like this is the right part? https://www.ricambiamerica.com/259909-external-rear-view-mirror-control.html

Also seeing this solution on eBay, not sure if it's easy to do or if the plastic is properly coated to be hard touch / not sticky. https://www.ebay.com/itm/315452147673?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&com_cvv=8fb3d522dc163aeadb66e08cd7450cbbdddc64c6cf2e8891f6d48747c6d56d2c

The one I bought is a Chinese copy I presume (less than 100$) but it does the job and it's not sticky for now. I'll get back to you in 10 years to let you now :D

The ebay solution you' re pointing to looks more like a AC knob to me. So if only the mirror switch knob is sticky, you should probably try to swap one from your AC controls first to see if that works out.
But if the surroundings (the backplate with the arrow signs) are sticky too then you need the whole thing.

Can you link to what you purchased? Are you happy with the quality? Does it look like you old broken knob? Mine switch has the electronic in and out mirrors, so not sure if it's the same part you purchased.

    Thanks in advance.

This knob has a stalk which is too long and made out of a plastic which breaks under the load.
Ferrari knows about this and doesn’t have the motivation to offer an improved part.
My car has gone thru a couple of broken knobs
However in the F8. The knob has a shorter stalk and maybe is made out of a stronger plastic.
Who knows if the F8 part can be used in the 458. Or if the dealer has an aftermarket fix for the broken stalk either with glue or with stalk replacement

Of course the logical solution is something which the aftermarket parts dept at the factory should do

Ask your service center to replace your broken 458 switch with the switch from the later models such as F8
Replacing the poor design of the original switch with the same poorly designed switch again Well that’s the definition of insanity

Thanks to @SoFLFerrari for the great write-up and pictures. Was able to replace my broken knob/switch this wknd and it was straight forward. Also used the tip from another member to put a little grease on the mounting tabs/clips so the next time someone needs to do this, it should be easier to get that lower dash area to pull off.
