Just wondering if anyone here works out regularly and has had good results with any kind of supplements or LEGAL drugs. I work out like 5-6 times a week, take nothing, not even protein powder, but I'm looking to get more muscle fibre results. If you read Men's Health or any kind of muscle magazine there are so many products now that advertise "legal steroid" results. Anyone ever try any of these products? Ie. the one Mark McGuire was using.

    Are they harmful?

People in the US have the most expensive urine in the world.

    Think about it.

    You don't need any supplements.

    Here's a thought:

If it is billed as a supplement that's supposed to help your body do X thing, and it isn't regulated by the FDA, then don't take it.

Most, if not all, of this is just crap and isn't regulated by the FDA at all.

When I used to train at a serious level, I would drink 10 raw egg whites per day. It sounds pretty gross, but I would throw them in a blender with some milk and chocolate powder, making it drinkable. Egg whites are the purest form of protein, and I gained around 30lbs in a couple of months, pretty much all muscle. Friends thought I was using "juice", but I can assure you that I was not. Whatever you body does not use gets flushed out in normal bathroom activities.

I am not a doctor, so I don't know how healthy this is......all I can say is that it worked well for me.

I took 1-AD for awhile worked really well, but you need to be big already for it to really help. (be prepared to loose you sex drive thow) But really the best thing is just taken a good whey protien and eating right you will blow up. PLus make sure you push yourself hard when lifting.

I think the majority of these are worthless supplements. I lift regularly (my best bench is 525 at 180#, age 49) and I am trained by a Mr USA winner and powerlifter who seems to use a little more than I do, but not much.

I think the data would support:

Protein intake needs to be adequate and I use a supplement for that, as my diet is weak in that area.

Anabolic steroids work, but are usually illegal and have alot of side effects if taken on a long-term basis, such as hypertension, acne, risk of heart disease and prostate cancer, etc. In a short-term study from the New England J of Medicine, there were few side effects, but the study was only about 18 weeks long, as I recall.

Creatine seems to help with power-lifting type work but not aerobic exercise, and even this is controversial. The drug can cause renal failure and diarrhea. There are no long-term safety studies. Loading doesn't help, but sells more.

EPOGEN can help aerobic exercises, but can kill you with hyperviscosity syndrome, and this has happened to cyclists abusing the drug.

HGH may help, but side effects can be prominent-acromegaly is a disease caused by tumors producing the hormone.

Never take ephedra or its derivatives-it can kill you, despite what the ads say. I have seen bleeds into the brain myself.

Andros. as per Mark M.-see steroids above. Data are mixed as to whether it is any good for strength.

    Hope this helps,

I have a VERY hard time believing that, Arnold Swarzennegger's best bench press in his prime was 480, you're that much stronger than Ahhnald?

I've been lifting for 20 years.

The guys that get good results are the guys that show up to workout even on Friday nights

Good food, Good Sleep, simple workout... don't miss.

I have never tried anything more exotic than a little protein powder.

The diet and exercise world is full of people getting rich selling short-cuts... I've seen thousands come and go. Never bought into it.

In Arnold's day... 0-60mph in 6 seconds was fast for a Ferrari :)

My good friend, was in a bench press contest and he picked 510 for his first attempt... he did two reps for a joke and they tossed him out, for being a jerk :)

Most supplements are BS. 99.9%. A few have been shown to give marginal results in research. The ones that do work have become illegal, for good reason. As for eating more protein, that does not work either. Your body can only use x-amount of protein/day. I believe it is 60-120grams/kilogram/day. I could be wrong about the units. Anyhow, anything above this number, your body must process the extra protein and turn it into amino acids to pass in the urine because proteins are too big to pass through the kidneys themselves. You cannot store this extra protein(amino acids) as muscle so you piss them out. The only problem with this, besides taxing the kidneys, is you must leach extra vitamins out of your system to break the proteins down. You could be using those extra vitamins for repair after workouts, but you are now using them to breakdown the excess protein. Just work out hard and if you are genetically blessed to be big you will be. You have a natural limit though. 5 time mr Olympia is a patient of mine and he says he does not do any steroids. I have always found that hard to believe but I have never seen anything that leads me to believe he does. i met his mom and she is freakishly big for a 60 plus woman. Maybe it's genetic.

    Alan,

What I used to do was simply calculate exactly how much protien I use during a workout day, and only intake that amount to avoid excess.

I do have a question though; If I take whey protien, and I don't workout hard enough, etc... will that protien make me fat at all? I'm not looking to gain weight, just add muscle? lol, as you can tell, this is clearly not my field, so please let me know.

Have you tried Creotine, it can be bought from most sport shops. My Training partner and my self swear by it. My training partner of ten years is Denise Francise, who was the 1992 Mr universe overal winner and N.A.B.B.A and I.F.B.B pro, incase you want to look him up on the net. Another one of my frends who swears by it is Pro Ernie Taylor. The powder or liquid is drank or mixed in with food, and gives you added energy and strenth along with positive results as long as you train, eat and sleep correctly.

What differance does that make Pacman, i have been on it my self. The original question was regarding Legal substances and i gave the answer of Creotine. Creotine is used alot of season, but not only by bodybuilders but athleats across the board its good stuff,i also have frends who play professional football (UK) who use it, if the pros use it it must be good. The writer wanted to know about a good legal substance i gave him one,i asumed he wanted to know about substances to help in musel growth although its also good for engurance sports, if he wanted to know about hard core stuff i would have given a different answer. And name droping names of different gear is no great thing.Oh yea and i never ONCE implied that Creotine alone was used to build my frends or my bodys. OK!

In my opinion it's better in the long run to stay away from any and all supplements. The farthest I'd go is protein shakes to help put on mass. But that's just my feelings. ****'s too dangerous and far too controversial to seem safe.

    Chaa,

That's because your post implies that creatine is a major factor in the way your "buddies" are big, when it most likely does nothing at all.

I have played enough sports, know enough pro atheletes to realize that steroids make up a major part of their training programs.

you are in a way quite right Texas, you know when i started weight training then after time body building some 23 years ago, gear ws common place in the gyms and all kinds of crap as going round, as for my self any courses i may have taken were becourse while training with D. Francis we were training towards the Mr Universe comp, and if i did not i would not have keept up with him during training.During extream end training its hard to compete top end with out it, You wont find many people who would willingly stand up and say they have taken courses but someone has to_One must also remember that gear should be used as a training aid and not used continusly. I dont regret many thing that i have done in my younger days, and of course the older you get the more you start thinking about consiquences about thing you do with your body. The last time i was on a course it was around 12 years ago when my frend won the Universe. But yes Texas you are quite right.
