The CHinese are hoping for a manned Moon shot by 2020. The US has to beat them or else

William--I love all things space-related. But what interest does the moon currently hold, other than bragging rights? Are we trying to hold some sort of "eminent domain"?

The Moon is a great place for a base, it has large mineral resources, good possibility of water, the lunar sand is good for making cement for building a base. If there is water it can be used for human consumption of course but also for making oxygen & rocket fuel. It would be an excellent scientific/military base far surpassing the silly ISS and could be much larger & more affordable, especially once lunar industry starts up & takes advantage of the local resources

My worries about the Chinese is that they are notorious for infringing upon borders or invading other countries & forcing them under the rule of their murderous dictators. They have done this to Tibet, Mongolia, they annexed a small portion of NW India, they have been rattling the sabre regarding Taiwan for decades, They hold the leash to North Korea & have vast influence over all other asian nations.

If the Chinese get to the Moon before the US or EU you know they will try to claim that the entire Moon is Chinese territory & it would be Very bad for the Chinese to have a lunar military/science base on the Moon when the US doesnt

Could you envision the potential disaster of a battle for the moon?

Most certainly, Sci Fi is full of battles & I am sure that in the future, perhaps this C humanity will see its first War in space. It wouldnt take much for the CHinese to land on the Moon first & take some small Sidewinder type missiles with them. Of course the Moon is a big place but the first people back will have a head start on everybody else. I wouldnt mind so much if it was India , Japan, Or the EU who lands there next as long as its not friggin China bcus that would be bad news for every other country

They would have to design missiles specifically for use in space, an "off the rack" air to air missile would be almost worthless in space. And if they did bring missiles with them we have airborne laser technology that will work quite nicely with no atmospheric interference.

By the time the Chinese get there, we will have a Valet to park the capsule at Starbucks there.
