Welcome to F-chat. Look around cause there is tons of information here. The 308's are great cars to start off with. They are affordable, hold their value, and there are lots of parts cross references and tips to keep you away from the dealer for parts. Owning one is really great and I always smile every time I look at my GTB.

A good investment?
IMHO the only good investments when it comes to cars,
are the million dollar plus collector cars.
As far as a 308 being a good Ferrari to start out with,
well it depends.
What are you looking for in a Ferrari?
If you need modern conveniences then no,
you might want to look at one of the newer models like a 355.
But if you enjoy old sports cars, and can live with old sports car performance, ... remember the newest 308 is now 19 years old...
Then the 308 might be right up your alley.
There are also different model types of 308, and various changes were made to the car over the years.
The oldest of the 308s were carb, with the later years being fuel injected.
The best bit of advice I can give about considering a 308,
is to do as much research as possible before you decide to purchase one.
Figure out if you have the ability to do all the service work on the car yourself, or if you will need to take the car to a shop for service.
If the later, then locate a shop that will be servicing the 308, and get references from other Ferrari owners that have work done there, even before you buy a car.
A lot of people get Ferrari fever, and buy the first car that comes along, rather than waiting till the right one comes along.
If you get knowledgeable about the 308, do your legwork,
and have a proper PPI done on a good car then you could have a very enjoyable Ferrari owning experience.
But if you go at it half cocked and pick up a time bomb 308,
You could have a very bad, and very expensive first Ferrari.

The 308 can be a great starter Ferrari if it is in good condition. Make sure you get a complete Pre Purchase Inspection done before you purchase one. Also try to find one that has complete service records.

Let me be the latest to welcome you to F-chat. I'm like you in that I don't own a Ferrari yet, but if I can offer you one piece of advice it would be this...Try to avoid any sort of emotional response if you happen to visit your local dealer. This board is totally awesome. Watch and learn from the others out here. My advice is to do what I'm doing now...just sit and watch this board for a good six months or so and do little but read the threads and "listen" to what others are saying about their personal F-cars and the others out there asking for advice about one thing or another. I'm still trying to decide if the 328 is right for me or if I should go for what my heart really wants which is one of the 12's out there - either a Testarossa or a Boxer. You'll learn more than you would ever imagine just by reading the posts and little by little, you will become quite knowledgeable about all sorts of issues you didn't know even existed and then you'll be able to answer your own question.

It's a great board full of knowlegeable people - many of whom are truly experts about Ferrari's in every sense of the word- but the best way to help yourself is to lurk here for a while. Kind of like being the new kid in school where you just sort of lay low for a while until you know the layout of the schoolyard.

 

Look at and drive as many as you possibly can. Travel wherever they are, it will pay off in the long run.

When you have seen 10 and driven at least 5, choose the model that suits you best and get 2 thourough inspections done, One by a dealer and one by a specialist.

You will never look back.

 

No Ferrari is "a good investment". Buy one because you want one. I love my '79 308 GTS.
