i put this in the general section and got 44 views and no comments, so i have repeated it here:

ok. given these cars are now both in the used category, but to use the extremes of price, the early 550's are probably available at under $100k, whereas the 575's are still around $170k....is there enough of a performance difference to warrant this price dif.
i will admit that i am also lumping together and discounting othr factors such as mileage and age....so go ahead and compare the last 550 with the first 575, of equal mileage, and the price dif is still about $40k.....and given that in my opinion the 550 is 98% of the same car as the 575, i just dont see the advantage in paying up for the new model.

so the question is put to those who have experience with both: is there a significant difference between the 2?

Personally, I don't think the 575 is worth the difference... unless, of course, you simply must have the F1! ;)

Agreed. The 575 is a much more complex car and so you are exposed to more complex and expensive problems.

Mechanically it is very similar except of course for the optional F1 system. The car gained a great deal of electronics though and went to the CAN buss technology to network the stuff. It is much like the 360 in that sense but on a much higher magnitude. It is the same technology that the Germans have been pushing and has caused the somewhat well known problems in the 7 series BMW's. The incidence of problems are not REAL high but are nightmareish when they happen. In 575 school Dave Helms and I were both impressed at how little time was devoted to mechanical and how much time was devoted to electronic issues including quite a bit of time spent taking the interior apart and the dash out and even removing the doors to gain access to the electronics. When that happens in school you know they know we are in for a ride.
