Soren's post about his new car and his comment about the throttle cable got me thinking.

Yeah, I know, another new project.

I need an old throttle cable to practice on. My intention is to strip off the plastic and wrap the cable with 304 Stainless steel wire. In the old days of sailing ships it's called "Serving", it's use is on the mast shrouds to protect from weathering. I plan to make a serving mallet and use my lathe to turn the cable at a very slow speed all the while keeping tension on the wrapping wire.

You need a wrap to hold the longitudinal wires in place and stainless should give a nice appearance when it's all done plus it should last forever.

It's the push/pull cable that goes around the front of the engine.

Anyway, does anyone have one just sitting around?

Here's a little bling for ya.

I wrapped my old push/pull throttle cable with .032 304 SS safety wire.

It was a bit of a chore as I had to jury rig some things on the lathe to accommodate the length and flexibility. Getting the old plastic cover off was also a challenge. I had to do it three inches at a time so the cable wouldn't unravel. Peel three inches then wrap three inches. It takes about a hundred feet of safety wire to wrap the whole length.

I secured both ends with Oetiker clamps, it was the only solution I could come up with.

The overall diameter went from .273 to .293, or about a half millimeter so the plastic clips should accommodate it without any stress. It's as flexible as it was before but now it should be impervious to heat unlike the original plastic covering.

Now I have to go about re installing it..........if I can remember how it was routed ;)
