I'm going to take the Queen out of commission after thanksgiving for a bunch of issues that need addressing, partially so I'm at least presentable for the FCA National in my backyard next year.

One item I'm going to do is the installation of the headlight covers that were an option on euro spec cars. Does anyone have detail photos showing period-correct attachments for these? I've seen two types; the simple L-shaped clip where one leg is screwed to the body and the other to the lens. The other I've seen for the front-most connection is a screw going through the lens and then though a ferrule-spacer and into the body - the ferrule is sometimes painted to match the body; other times it has been polished.

and another technical issue - the Queen/Dino type headlight covers are not sealed to the body - so they need to be removed once in a while to clean whatever minute road junk has gotten inside the void. With that in mind, I do not think a self-tapping metal screw would be the advisable fastener. I think you would want a nut welded or epoxied (I don't want a complete nose repaint) to the back-side of the body metal to receive a bolt, not a screw.

Does anyone have any detail shots of the headlight covers on any of the DeRethy 330 Speciales? Given their rarity, they probably still have their original fastener-types and are very close in time to my very early Queen.

    thanks in advance.

Bryan - I faced the same problem when doing my friend's DINO.
I fabricated small brackets from 1/16" stainless steel and attached them to the inside of the headlight cutouts. Then I drilled and tapped the brackets for #8 machine screws.
All hardware is stainless steel and I used nylon washers under the screw heads at the plastic.
The job looks perfect, if I may say so!

Napolis used a similar detail on the P4 resto.........no pics left here but maybe in resto section at "dash talk"......

Bob Z.'s tapping of the clip would seem the way to go........

My car is not a Eurospec but did have headlight covers on when I bought it. They were attatched with L brackets. A car wash managed to crack one while doing a detail, so I took them off. I bought a pair that apparently are for a 275 and are too big for my car. I've thought about cutting them down but have never gotten around to it. California regulations prohibit covers that are not sealed so I doubt I'll ever put them back on. Bryan, where did you find them to fit your car? There is a picture of my car with the covers on page 17 of the book "Forty Years of Ferrari V-12 Engines by W.E. Gasich if you have the book.

jeez, that's quite the attachment detail on the California!

Drew, I got mine on ebay and they are a tad big. I will have to spend a bunch of time sanding them down to the right profile.

Bob, do you have any close-up pics, or can you get them?

I plan to convert my 330 GTC to covered headlights, possibly this winter.
I like the photos of John's Dino - very clean.
It's also similar to the setup on my Deutto except that it had external clamps.

In fact, I may try and modify the GTC to accept Duetto covers - that would be perfect.

They look like the original UK spec fitings (weren't the headlight covers a delete option in the UK rather than a cost option?)

I thought maybe I would put headlight covers on the 72 Euro Dino I'm working on now. I bought a set from Brandoli and they are way oversize, not just a little. Has anyone used the covers from Brandoli? I was also going to make a chrome ring for them.

Jon, when Bob Zambelli did the Brandoli covers on my former Dino (post #2 above), he cut them down gradually with a dremel tool. It was very tedious work, and consumed several hours. The results, however, were well worth the effort. Fred

I bought a pair of Superformance Perspex covers (not Brandoli) around 2005. Each was approx 10mm oversize all the way around. Made a cardboard template as a guide. Mounted an abrasive wheel (probably something like 80 grit) in a pillar drill, and gradually worked my way down with lots of test checks.

Jon, I love the Brandoli covers. I believe they are the same shape and curvature as on the original Scaglietti covers. A thin chrome trim would be beautiful. Once you have the lenses fitted you can experiment with thin chrome design tape to get the desired thickness.

I had the same issue with a Duetto. Installed a rivet nut under the bolt and it worked like a charm.
If interested, I can post photos.
How where the UK Dino covers, originally installed in the UK?

    Regards, Alberto

UK/Maranello Concessionaires lenses were made from flat plexi so don’t visually continue the fender form the way of the original Scaglietti/Brandoli (3D shaped). Here’s a set I believe were installed by MC.

While they look cool it looks like they would eventually rub on the paint and collect dust and condensation on the inside. Is this not a problem for those that have them installed?
