I recently replaced the cambelts and rebuilt the water pump (bearings and seals) on my 84 Mondial 308 QV. When the engine is cold there is ticking or clicking noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine. When the engine warms up the noise disappears. Has anyone had a similar experience and what was the problem please?

Wild shot in the dark, but I had the same thing once. It would only happen at start up and then vanish in a few minutes. It turned out to be the rotor in the distributor fouling on the wire posts! I had to carve the plastic down to fix it. I would be shocked if this was it for you though!

Yes -- one test you might try is spraying a little belt dressing (or WD40) on the v-belts (although the noise was remarkably "metallic", in my case, it was the AC v-belt riding up one side of the sheave and then "snapping" back down into place. Same symptom you describe -- goes away after the belt heats up a little from running).

Depending on the belt you put on you can get a static discharge from the belt rubbing against the metal, this usually sounds like a ticking and sometimes sounds like you have a bad bearing someplace. easiest solution is to spray WD 40 on the belt and see if it dissapears, if it does then it is just static discharge - anyway this disapears as the belts and engine warm up also!

The same thing happened to me. It seemed to me that the oil is not getting up to the valves until the oil heats up. I put some top cleaner in the oil and hasn't heard it since... give it a try

I had the same problem, check the belt tension and make sure the alternator bracket is intact

If the timing belt covers are installed wrong, they will rub a few different pulleys causing noise.

I had a little ticking noise in my 308. Dealer told me it was a vacuuum issue in the power braking system. No functional impact but it makes a little noise about 2-3 times a second.

Really nothing to worry about. I had the same noise, when cold, after my belts were changed. Mechanic told me that the alternator belt takes a set when cold which works itself out after it warms up.

No, i'm not a Ferrari mechanic.....but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. My wife threw me out again. :(

One cause of the ticking can be pulley miss-alignment. The belt rides up on one side of the pulley, then snaps down into place. If the WP pulley isn't all the way on the shaft, or the alternator bracket is cocked, you can get this effect.

Especially noticable if the pulley has been media blasted, or refinished leaving a slightly rough texture in the belt groove. Wear often polishes the pully's side to the point that the snapping doesn't occur. Then it appears after some service work.

I have the same condition on my 308. I was told by a mechanic that it was the result of one of the air-injector tubes having a pinhole that would close after things warmed up.
I was skeptical that this was the problem. It sure sounded like a belt to me. I was afraid it was the timing belt making the noise. It's very unnerving hearing the sound and not knowing what it is.
I'm going to try the WD-40 and see if that makes it stop.
    Thanks for the tip,
    Will

My money is on the a/c belt. This is very common with QV's and 3.2's.

    It was my a/c belt.
    WD40 cleared mine up.
    Good luck!
