CAR magazine, the respected British publication available here in the USA, ran a big Ferrari issue in June of 2007 and stated of the F355:
"make sure you stay away from main dealers when it's time to change the cam belts every three years. "They'll want to life the engine out, and that's a 23 hour job that could cost you 1500 (pounds which is about $3k), says Verdi. Luckily, specialists like Verdi can do the job with the engine in situ for half as much."

    Really???

I wouldn't mind servicing the F355 for those rates!

Anyone familiar with England knows it's a relatively expensive place, even more so now with the weak dollar. Yet oddly enough servicing a F355 is far cheaper there than here? What gives? Are we Americans just easily duped or is it that the English know something our shops can't figure out?

Tell the owner of most any other car your regular 30k mile service could cost $6k to $10k and they'll think you're either full of $%#@# or stupid.

So, why are we being charged so much?

Perhaps Europeans drive their cars more and service it more often. More service calls leads to lower price/service from a fixed cost absorption perspective. My guess.

As a comparison. I have my 348 booked in next week for an 18K service + belt replacement + valve clearance + cam seals (all with engine out). GB£1400+tax = GB£1645(US$3200). This price covers exacly what it says, but if you want (or need) new tensioners/water pump/hoses it will obviously be more. The 355 does not require valve adjustment though.

Another big additional cost would be a clutch - but I don't consider this a 'service' item - it wears out when it wears out. If they put a new clutch/flywheel/release bearing in 'just in case' then I'm sure the total 'service' bill will be thousands..

Yes, it is possible to change just the belt and save a few hundred by removing the fuel tanks an levering up the engine. Not worth it IMO but has been discussed to death in the past.
