The least this car deserves is a Porsche V8 from a used 928 or something, The American V6 really blows for this application.

At least the body looks decent, but the original engine/trans was probably removed during the theft... He probably bought it for ~$15k, and is making money, so good for him, though I definately wouldn't buy it.

"the engine bay looks factory if you didn't know better"

Yep, I would definitely say a V6 looks exactly like a ferrari V8 to me, no difference at all!

I guess the shift gate would not work for the american transmission? Tacky. But at least it is on the road. Maybe this guy should have taken an engine from a wrecked 308 and kept it more original.

You guys are way too hard on other car guys. Remember we are all motorheads in the end. I dont see anything wrong with what this guy did. Not everybody can afford the real deal in perfect shape. I have owned many replicas and have been proud of all of them. If I was in the market for a 308 I would buy this one in a heartbeat and throw a Corvette EFI motor in it.

    Exactly.
It's not even a replica trying to be passed off as a Ferrari. It's an engine swap done for financial reasons. Remember, there is so much aftermarket product for that engine the owner can have fun hot rodding the thing and getting a lot of bang for the buck. Nothing done to the car is irreversible so what's the problem?

If it had the stock engine/trans in it obviously it would be worth more but I have a feeling everyone would be warning against buying it not knowing what had been done to the car while it was stolen. There might even be a few "You might as well figure on rebuilding/replacing the engine, who knows what damage was done to it" comments.

I promise you he's not worried about when the last belt change was done. :)

Personally, I find a Fiero with a lot of ugly body panels and a couple of Ferrari badges bolted to it much more offensive.

But it could never be put back to how it was, if you are proud of replicas would you wear a fake Rolex or fake Armani?, its the same thing, its all pretending to have what you can't afford

I don't want to speak for Michael, but I would say it depends on the replica. Would I ever been seen in the general vicinity of a Datsun Z-car turned Ferrari GTO? Good God no!!!!
However there are MANY Cobra/GT40 replica/reproductions on the market that are better in almost every way than the originals. On top of that, I would guess that 85% of people that see a Cobra on the street automatically assume it is a replica and can appreciate it for what it is instead of knocking it for what it isn't. Of course I'm talking about the high end cars that have been put together with the best components and lot's of time/skill.

Like it or not, the car for sale IS a Ferrari, just not one with the proper engine. We can have a seperate thread about what makes a Ferrari a Ferrari (engine, chassis, design, or the whole) but that could bring up some tricky issues as well....

Well, it was a GTSi. It's probably just as fast with the 3.8 litre 6, and you can get parts anywhere -- probably a major consideration in Kansas.

For 15K or so I'd keep it around.

I fully understand your point, the only replica I would ever have and I would use the word replica rather than fake is a 250gto based on the 330 or 275

And yes to the Cobra or gt40 IF it has a ford lump rather than the Rover V8's we see in the Uk

Not sure what kind of tranny you could put in that thing, but a turbo would probably wake it up and actually make it a fun ride. If the motor was missing who is going to fault the guy for at least getting it back on the road?

Couldn't agree more. Heck, we have guys splitting hairs over whether or not a Dino is a "true" Ferrari. I think some get a little out of control over purity.

There is only a 9 hp between the 3800 N/A and the Ferrari motor. If there was clearance room for a supercharger it'd put 240 hp which is 26 hp faster than a stock 81 308 GTSi. Yeah I know alot of you say blasphemy that there's no Ferrari motor in that thing. It's just as fast, without all the maintenance woes, and doesn't drink as much gas, and it's not a rebodied Fiero.

I'd say it's at least better than leaving it all gutted out in an impound lot. It'd be interesting seeing it race a stock '81 308 GTSi on the track. Although it's got a yucky auto transmission. The engine doesn't change the name of the car. By that logic a VW beetle becomes a Ferrari if you put a Ferrari motor into it. It's a custom Ferrari. Customed bastard ***** child Ferrari, but still a Ferrari.
