I happened across several issues of Classic & Sportscar Magazine (Dec89/Mar90/Sep90) recently. The adverts & auction results hammer home the fact that contact with reality had become somewhat tenous.

A typical dealers advert of the time

The Loxwood Motor Company (Mike Wheeler) offered

    1987 Testarossa 8,900 miles : £144,995
    1987 Testarossa 9,300 miles : £134,995
    1989 328GTS 600 miles : £ 99,995
    1988 Mondy Cab 7,000 miles : £ 94,995
    1987 328GTS 6,000 miles : £ 74,995
    1986 328GTS 21,000 miles : £ 69.995
    1987 Mondy Cab 26,000 miles : £ 74,995
    1984 308GTS 42,000 miles : £ 55,995
    1985 Mondy QV 12,000 miles : £ 49,995
    1983 Mondy QV 44,000 miles : £ 45,995

    1985 288GTO reg B288GTO : £999,995
    1966 275GTB/2 51,000 miles : £925,000
    1973 Daytona 14,000 miles : £450,000
    1960 250 PF Coupe : £195,000
    1973 246GTS 9,000 miles : £180,000

Auction results reveal the following sales
    1977 512BB £238,611
    1980 512BB £260,304
    1976 308GT4 £ 59,653

Interesting post, I bought a pile of Motorsport (green Cover) Magazines in a charity shop a few years back starting from 1969, in the first one there was a 7 litre Ac Cobra and an ex Le Mans Ford gt40 Both for £4000 Each (yes £4k Each!!), there was also a Maserati 250f for a mere £20,000

In 1988 dealers were selling Mondy Qv's for £24,995 but in the 1990 mags the same dealers are selling them for £49,995 obviously at the height of the boom!!

I find it really interesting how the car market changes so much, although I find it darn depressing what the Mondy's are making at the Mo :-(
I just hope that they start rising again just like the 246's did in the late 70's when you could buy them for £2000, and look at them now!! ;-)

4000 doesn't sound much, but my grandparents bought a house for 4000quid back in the early 70's.
I also think that when the Rolls Royce Camargue came out in ?76, it was the worlds most expensive car at around 29,000quid. How much was a new Daytona or Dino back in 1969?

A friend paid Mike Wheeler at Loxwood £ 50000 for his 308 in May 1990 - still has it and still loves it - worth every penny apparently !

The book I have suggests the 83/84 Mondial QV was about £26k brand new.

If that was the case, then £49k in 1990 is very odd indeed.

Cant remember when it was but I remember longing after a 308GTS "when I were a lad" and looking at a price guide they were £20,000 new!

It was the 'Greed is Good' Era, with the red braces and property boom, the prices all crashed again in 90/91, remember this was the time F40's were selling for up to £1.2M, Countach's and BB's well over £200K

I think at the time no-one thought the prices would drop, a friends dad has a Jenson Interceptor that he was offered £28k for during the late 80's boom which he turned down, he said he would be lucky if he got £8k for it now!

On my original post the Loxwoods prices are what the dealer was offering the cars at - they may not have actually sold for those prices BUT the auction prices at the bottom are what cars actually changed hands for
    i.e.
    1977 512BB £238,611
    1980 512BB £260,304
These prices were achieved in Paris, interestingly the auction reports that the French appeared to have got on the car boom a little late & were paying above UK prices! Also Ferraris in the U.S. were priced below cars in the UK.
The main thrust of that particular auction was Aston Martins and the prices were sky high.

I also spied a couple of adverts for 'Car Investment Clubs' - where you could buy shares in a classic car. The car is never actually driven it justs sits in a garage somewhere appreciating in value whilst you dream of your jet set lifestyle (well that was the plan...)

No doubt the buyer of this car was told that this was a unique investment opportunity! Just like Endowment Policies, the Stock Market, the Housing Market...

Wouldn't surprise me, I can remember what some friends were buying/selling their cars for at the time and what they were worth a year or so later

Very interesting stats there but one car jumped out at me more than the others. I know it was a much newer car then but the prices of Super Ferraris don't seen to change too greatly with age! That is an impressive price for a 288 in anyones books. What sort of money could you get one for nowadays? £175k, £200k?? I wonder if anyone bid on that £1million GTO!!

Hopefully the bottom will drop out of house prices very soon, I will buy a very nice house for very little money then watch the next boom come in! If only everything was so easy eh :D

But I doubt if it sold for that! I think Ben was in the right area with his price range. I'm not right up to date on my prices but 288GTO's go for £140-180k. They always seem to hover above F40 prices - due no doubt to their comparative rarity 273 built vs 1300+ F40's
As much as I adore the F40, given the choice I would have the 288GTO

I'd definitely have the F40 over the GTO but I am surprised that the GTO fetches (give or take a few K) the same as the F40 given the relative rarity of the GTO. I guess that is testiment to the iconic status of the F40 compared to the GTO. £395k is very optimistic for a GTO but having seen an Enzo advertised for a million quid not so long ago, anything is possible!!

Er sorry Typo, I meant £195k, it was at Bob Houghtons in the current June edition of C&sc

there was a 288Gto at Snetterton on wednesday, and I was surprised how quiet it was, I suppose its all down what exhaust you have, mind you it was damn quick

I think I would prefer the F40 purely on looks, but I would also take the 288 on its rarity (money no object that is!!)

Out of interest there was a 288 Replica sold recently on Fleabay US for $89K, this was an exact copy built from a 308 by Norwood (American Ferrari tuners/turbo specialists), it even had the correct engine alignment.
I would prefer to have that with no heritage/provenance and £120K+ left in my pocket, just my two penneth ;-)

I saw that 288 at Bob Houghtons a couple of months back alongside 4 F40s in various incarnations. Amazing place that workshop :D
