Replacing front brake lines on a 308

    How would you remove the front rubber brake line? I was thinking of unscrewing the rubber line to back it out of the bracket to facilitate the removal of the top part of the s shaped fitting. The rubber line screws into the bracket and has a tab bent down on it and the other side has a larger nut and two tabs bent down locking it. Since the rubber line has ends that do not rotate and the nut you screw it into is locked down how would you replace the line. If you screwed one end in you would not be able to screw the other end in as neither of the 4 sides rotates???!!? I have new lines and unbent the tabs on the s side of the bracket and was considering replacing it. It was a 24mm nut I have quite a bit of tools and could not find a 24mm wrench that would fit in there. After working at it and thinking about it for a while I gave up and wanted to ask you guys how its done!

    Leave the rear bent tab in place--it'll hold that big nut from turning. Remove the old rubber brake line from the caliper first, then you can turn it out of the inner connection...(bleed appropriately).

    This is from memory when I changed all 4 of my 1977 308 GTB's lines last year--hope it's right.. :)

    That makes sense for the rears where the hose goes straight into the caliper and you could take the caliper off and after screwing in the rubber line to the chassis you could screw and turn the caliper around and around? On the fronts both hard lines are screwed into the rubber lines which in turn are screwed into a bracket with a nut that is locked by tabs.

    The only solution I can think of is screw the rubber line into each bracket at the same time, but one would turn one way and one the other way since they are screwed in on different ends of the same hose?

    What am I missing?

    looks like you unbend the two tabs, remove the nut, and pop the hose end out of the hole in the bracket.

    the clip piece is/was available separately. According the parts manual, they went with a different style clip june 15, 1980.

    the clip you have looks like it's part number 14199111, and the newer style clip is a u-shaped thing that is part number 116374.

    the newer style with the u-shaped clip doesn't use a nut. I assume the hose end just has a slot in it instead of being threaded, and the clip is wavy to provide a bit of clamping pressure....like this from a porsche (ATE also):

    The fronts are a royal PITA. You have to un-bend the tabs on the large nut ( I used a looong flat blade screwdriver and a small hammer to start them, then pliers to finish), then somehow find a position where you can get the giant 24 mm wrench on it and loosen it. It probably took me an hour or more to replace each side.

    It was worth the piece of mind though, as my car still had the original brake lines ('78 marked on them) - scary.
